Tips for caring your Yixing teapots

Presented here are our tips for caring your Yixing teapots. It may be different from what you have read elsewhere, but the intention here is to share with you our ways of caring the Yixing teapots. Once you get to know how to use and treat your teapots correctly, your teapots will, over time, slowly reveal the natural and beautiful sheen of the Zisha clay.

1. Rinse the teapot inside and out with hot water
Before using your teapot to make tea, rinse it (inside and outside) with hot water to clean and warm up the teapot.

2. Wipe the teapot body during tea brewing
The temperature of the teapot gets quite warm during tea brewing and is the good time to wipe the teapot's exterior with a clean cotton cloth.

3. Avoid pouring boiling water all over the teapot when brewing tea
Some people like to pour boiling water all over the teapot in a tea-boat when brewing tea to keep the teapot warm. While this doesn’t has any real benefit to improve the clay’s look it might in fact destroy the sheen and may even cause uneven color patches on the teapot.

4. Empty the unconsumed tea from the teapots
Empty the unconsumed tea and tealeaf from the teapot after finished using it. Also give your teapot a good rinse inside and outside with hot water to remove the tea stain.

5. When drying out your teapot place it in an airy place with the lid opened
Do not dry your teapots under direct sun light. Instead, place it in an airy place with the lid opened. Only put it away when it is dried thoroughly. You should also try to keep the inside of your teapot dry and avoid dampness to build up.

6. Avoid placing your teapot in dusty places
Avoid placing your teapot in dusty and very oily places particularly in the kitchen near the cooker.

7. Avoid cleaning your teapot with strong chemical agents
Unless you have an old and grubby teapot otherwise cleaning your teapot with strong chemical agents will destroy the tea aroma left in the teapot and leaving a chemical taste behind. It may also destroy the sheen of the teapot and making it looks dull.
