Lochia discharge after normal delivery

Lochia discharge after normal delivery

A woman will go through the process of pregnancy and childbirth once in her life. It sounds simple, but the process is hard. Many women encounter various problems during the confinement period after giving birth. Today, we will explain the lochia problem that every woman will encounter. What should I do if lochia is discharged after a normal delivery? What's so noteworthy about this?

Lochia will be discharged after giving birth, but there is a difference between lochia from normal delivery and lochia from caesarean section. The time for lochia discharge after a normal delivery is shorter than that after a caesarean section. Due to different individual physical conditions, the duration of lochia period after normal delivery for new mothers is also different. Doing the following 5 things after delivery will help discharge lochia.

How long does it take for the lochia to clear up after a normal birth?

After giving birth, as the uterine decidua, especially the decidua at the placental attachment, falls off, decidua tissue containing blood and necrotic will be discharged through the vagina, which is medically called lochia. The discharge of lochia is beneficial to the postpartum recovery of the mother, but abnormal lochia will affect the physical health of the mother.

The lochia situation varies from person to person. Because everyone's physical constitution is different, there are also some slight differences in the duration of postpartum lochia. Generally speaking, it will be clean in about a month. The lochia period for women who have undergone cesarean section will be longer. Women who give birth naturally should maintain good eating habits after delivery and learn to control their emotions, because these factors will affect the normal discharge of lochia. According to clinical experience, lochia after normal delivery will generally be completely cleared within 4-7 weeks.

Experts remind that paying attention to the following matters after normal delivery can help to discharge lochia:

1. Keep the vulva clean. Change perineal pads and underwear frequently, wash the perineum with professional feminine care solution after urination and defecation, and scrub the vulva with 0.1% benzalkonium bromide solution at least once a day until the stitches on the perineal wound are removed.

2. After delivery, you should lie down or sit on the opposite side of the perineal wound. On the one hand, it can prevent postpartum lochia from invading the wound as much as possible; on the other hand, it can improve the blood circulation of the local wound and promote wound healing.

3. For those with swollen and painful vulva wounds, you can apply 95% ethanol (alcohol) gauze or 50% magnesium sulfate wet compress to the vulva.

4. For those with local swelling and induration of the perineal wound, 10 days after delivery, when the amount of lochia has significantly decreased, you can use 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution to soak the perineum for 15 minutes, twice a day. To promote perineal wound healing, reduce swelling, and relieve local swelling and discomfort.

5. When the perineal wound is obviously painful or has abnormal secretions, you should be alert to whether the wound is infected. If necessary, ask a doctor to examine and treat it.

In short, for most women, since the perineal incision has a strong healing ability, it can heal without infection as long as the postpartum care is proper. The stitches are usually removed 3-5 days after delivery. If absorbable intradermal sutures are used, there is no need to remove the stitches.
