What to do if a breastfeeding woman has a fever

Don't underestimate the breastfeeding period, it is a very critical period. For most women, breastfeeding is a critical period because they have to consider the impact on the child. Therefore, they cannot eat cold food, which will cause diarrhea and other conditions in the child. After having a fever, they must also take some correct methods. Let us now understand what to do if a breastfeeding woman has a fever.

If a breastfeeding mother has a fever (measured body temperature is between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius), she should rest in bed at home and ensure adequate sleep to facilitate physical recovery; eat more nutritious liquids such as milk, porridge, noodles, etc., eat small meals frequently, and avoid eating eggs when having a high fever; at the same time, drink plenty of warm boiled water, with a daily drinking water intake of no less than 500 ml. Don't reduce fever as soon as you have a fever, because a certain degree of fever (body temperature below 38.5℃) has a protective effect on the body. Breastfeeding can be suspended for 1 to 2 days during a high fever. During the period of cessation of feeding, breast milk should be expressed frequently to ensure that breastfeeding can be continued in the future. The mother herself should drink plenty of water, fresh juice, eat light and easily digestible food, and get a good rest. In this way, she will often get better quickly.

People with mild cold symptoms do not need special treatment and can heal on their own. If there are more severe symptoms such as cough and fever, medication should be taken under the guidance of a doctor. Generally, antiviral oral liquid, isatis root granules, penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics can be used for treatment. Wear a mask when breastfeeding; breastfeed before taking the medicine, and stop breastfeeding within 4-6 hours after taking the medicine to avoid the peak drug concentration in the blood;

When the baby has a fever and the body temperature is ≥38℃, breastfeeding should be temporarily stopped, and milking should be performed more than 3 times a day to maintain the lactation state of the breasts. Keep the baby's room well ventilated to reduce the concentration of influenza virus in the air; if necessary, let the baby leave the bedroom temporarily, boil 1-2 pounds of vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, and seal and fumigate the room for 4-6 hours.

If you decide to take medication, you can stop breastfeeding for a day or two. It will be better for the baby to breastfeed after the fever subsides. I am afraid that your medication may have side effects on the baby. Remember to express your milk during the two days you are taking the medicine to avoid breast engorgement and pain. Check if the fever is caused by mastitis. If so, you will have to stop breastfeeding for a few days. You should go to the hospital for an IV drip now, and then breastfeed your baby after the fever subsides. But you have to remember to express your milk during these days, otherwise your milk will dry up.

The above are the treatment methods for fever in lactating women. When using medications, you must choose carefully. Some drugs have a great impact on children and may even affect their brain development. For the health of their children, breastfeeding women are advised to develop a healthy body and eat more fruits and vegetables to ensure their own physical health.
