Amniotic fluid is not unfamiliar to expectant mothers. Of course, most people still have only a vague understanding of some of the indexes and indicators involved. Usually, the doctor draws a conclusion by checking the data during a gynecological examination. So today, we will analyze the relevant concepts and data on amniotic fluid depth and amniotic fluid index, so that everyone can have a further understanding of amniotic fluid data and help us detect some abnormal problems in time. Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI): The uterus is divided into four quadrants at right angles using the umbilical horizontal line and the linea alba as markers. The vertical diameter of the largest amniotic fluid pool in each quadrant is measured, and the sum of the four is the amniotic fluid index. The amniotic fluid depth refers to the vertical depth of the largest amniotic fluid pool indicated by B-ultrasound examination. Less than 2 cm indicates too little amniotic fluid, and greater than 8 cm indicates too much amniotic fluid. Ultrasound examination shows the vertical depth of the largest amniotic fluid pool. A depth of 3-8cm is considered normal. A value less than 3 cm indicates oligohydramnios, while a value greater than 8 cm indicates polyhydramnios. The amniotic fluid index divides the uterus into four quadrants: upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right. The sum of the maximum vertical depths of the dark areas of amniotic fluid in the four quadrants is the AFI. If the AFI is greater than 24cm, it is diagnosed as polyhydramnios. If the AFL is between 18-24cm, it is suspected polyhydramnios or too much amniotic fluid. Generally speaking, if the amount of amniotic fluid exceeds 2000ml at any time during pregnancy, it is called polyhydramnios. Amniotic fluid is one of the elements that maintain the survival of the fetus. Before the embryo begins to form, amniotic fluid must first be present to support the thick uterine wall and provide the fetus with the free space it needs for growth and development. Its functions also include: acting as a buffer when the uterus is subjected to external impact, maintaining a stable temperature, analyzing components to understand the health and maturity of the fetus, etc., and during labor pains, the pressure transmitted by the water bag can also help dilate the cervix. Therefore, regarding the issue of amniotic fluid in pregnant women, we have introduced the concepts and data ranges such as amniotic fluid index and amniotic fluid depth above, so you can pay special attention to it during regular gynecological examinations. In addition, you can adjust your diet or medication according to the doctor's advice. Of course, if there is an obvious excess or deficiency of amniotic fluid, you should pay special attention to it, because it may seriously affect the development of the fetus. |
