Common problems with self-examination of the anus

The posture should be gentle, because suddenly inserting the finger into the anus with force may cause muscle spasm due to stimulation and cause pain. Be especially careful when there are fissures or wounds in the anal canal. At this time, the examiner can breathe with the mouth open to reduce the tension of the anus.

Pay attention to the tightness of the anal canal. Normally, the anal canal has good contraction and elasticity, and only one finger can be inserted. If the external anal sphincter relaxes, it loses its elasticity, 2 to 3 fingers can be inserted, and fecal incontinence occurs; if the tension of the anal canal increases, it often indicates inflammation.

Check the anal duodenal ring, which is composed of the internal and external dilatation of the anus and the anal levator muscle and the phalangeal duodenal muscle. The contraction ability of this muscle ring can partially reflect the function of the external anal sphincter.

Check the duodenum, basically about 8 cm of the lower duodenum can be touched. The upper and lower walls of the duodenum should be carefully checked for tenderness, lumps, and stenosis, and the size, strength, and mobility of the lumps should be noted.

After the inspection, check the finger guard for blood or mucus. Pay attention to whether the blood stains are red or dark red; the color, properties, and smell of the mucus can be used as a reference for diagnosis.
