Tips for cutting your own hair

Tips for cutting your own hair

When we get our hair cut, we usually go to a barber shop and let the barber cut our hair. However, sometimes, even if it is a simple trim like getting bangs, if you have to go to the barber shop, it is not only troublesome but also expensive. Therefore, if you master some techniques, you can cut your hair at home. The key is to dare to try. So, what are the techniques for cutting your own hair? Let’s take a closer look below.

Check yourself out in the mirror. Since you'll be cutting your own hair at home, spend some extra time in front of the mirror to see where you want the layers. If you want, you can take a picture of yourself, print it out, and mark where you want the layers to be. Some people like long, natural layers, while others prefer a bolder look—one with different lengths of layers for a more defined look. So, please consider the following:

The texture of your hair. Layers will make your hair appear thicker, especially when the layers are cut very short. If you have thick or curly hair, you may want to cut it into longer layers. This will enhance the face shape.

Your face shape. Think about what length will work best for your face shape. Longer layers are better suited for round or square faces, while shorter layers are better for oval or heart-shaped faces.

Your preferred style. If you want to emulate a celebrity's style or a popular hairstyle, figure out how to create that style on your hair. See where to create layers, how to section the hair, and how to style it in the end.

Invest in a good pair of scissors. The most important tool for having hair that looks great (and not like your sister just cut it) is a pair of sharp, professional-grade barber’s scissors. If you use craft shears or kitchen shears, you won't be satisfied with the final result. You can buy a good pair of scissors from a hair supply store or mall.

Set up a home haircut environment. Choose a place with good lighting and close to a sink and mirror - basically a bathroom. Find a towel to drape over your shoulders, prepare a set of hairpins to secure your hair, and prepare scissors and a comb. Also, if necessary, have a mirror ready to check the back of your hair.

shampoo. Once you're ready to start, wash your hair and use a wide-tooth comb to comb out any tangles. Towel dry so your hair is damp but not dripping.

Layered Haircut

Divide your hair into sections. Unless you’re specifically going for an asymmetrical haircut, you’ll want to make sure the layers are the same length on both sides. In other words, the hair should be the same length at both temples, the layers behind both ears should be the same length, and so on. In order to cut the hair to the same length, you can divide the hair into different areas according to the layers.

Separate out the "top" area. Use a comb to separate it into two parts: one area on the left and one area on the right. The top layer is the part between the two areas.

Divide the top layer into two parts. The first part is from the back of the head to the forehead, and the second part is from the back of the head to the back of the neck. Use bobby pins to secure the two sections.

Divide into left front area and right front area. The two front areas start from the temples on both sides and go all the way to above the ears. Use a comb to separate the two sections and secure with bobby pins.

Don't touch the back part. You won't be cutting the longest section of your hair, so leave that as a base for your layering.

Trim the front of the top layer. Remove the top front section. Pull your hair up at a 90-degree angle to your head and hold it vertically between your index and middle fingers. Gather your hair between your fingers and let it down in front of your face. Slide your finger to the desired trim length. Then, cut the hair in front of your fingers.

The most common minimum layer length is to cut just below the earlobe or just below the chin. You can use your own photos as reference.

When cutting, cut it a little longer than the ideal length, not shorter than the ideal length, because the length will shrink after the hair dries. But you can cut more if necessary.

Trim the right front area. Untie the hair on the right front area. Use your index and middle fingers to hold your hair up and pull it up at a 90-degree angle to your head. Then lower it to the side of your face and slide your fingers to where you want to trim. Use scissors to trim the hair in front of your fingers.

Cut at an angle, rather than horizontally, so the layers appear softer.

Trim the left front area. Untie the hair on the left front area. Use your index and middle fingers to hold your hair up and pull it up at a 90-degree angle to your head. Then, lower it to the side of your face and slide your fingers to the area you want to trim. Use scissors to trim the hair in front of your fingers.

Trim the back hair. If you want, you can also add layers to the sides and back of your hair. Always use a second mirror to check the results, clip a small section of hair, and trim it with scissors. The layers in the back should be the longest, so be careful not to cut them too short. This section should be at least as long as the other sections.
