Is increased discharge normal during pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a special period. Due to the influence of body hormones, the body is prone to some changes. For example, stretch marks will deepen, nipples will turn brown, body secretions will increase, and your underwear will feel wet every day, which is very uncomfortable. Pregnant women who experience this situation are often worried about whether it will have an impact on their bodies. So is it normal to have increased secretions during pregnancy?

Is it normal for pregnant women to have excessive discharge?

After pregnancy, due to the effect of progesterone, blood flow in the vulva, vagina, cervix and other parts of the pregnant woman accelerates, and the tissues contain more water, so the amount of leucorrhea increases significantly than usual. This is a normal phenomenon. Pay attention to vulvar hygiene and change underwear frequently. If the amount of vaginal discharge is abnormally large and accompanied by an odor, you should be alert to the occurrence of inflammation.

After pregnancy, the corpus luteum of the ovary secretes a large amount of estrogen and progesterone to maintain the implantation and development of the fertilized egg. After 12 weeks, the placenta is formed, which gradually replaces the corpus luteum and continues to synthesize large amounts of estrogen and progesterone. Therefore, the pregnant woman's body always maintains a high estrogen and progesterone state. As a result, cells that are dependent on estrogen and progesterone undergo significant changes, blood flow in the vulva, vagina, cervix and other parts of pregnant women accelerates, tissues contain more water, and the secretions of cervical glands, vaginal exudate and desquamated cells mix together to form leucorrhea, which will be continuously discharged from the body during pregnancy.

Generally, no special treatment is required. Due to the large amount of leucorrhea-like secretions, the vulva is often kept moist, which causes certain irritation to the local skin. Therefore, pregnant women should pay attention to personal hygiene, change underwear every day, keep underwear dry, and wash the vulva with warm water every day.

Therefore, it is normal to have more vaginal discharge after pregnancy. However, if the amount of leucorrhea increases after pregnancy and is accompanied by vulvar itching and a special odor, you should go to the hospital for a gynecological examination.

What to do if pregnant women have excessive secretions

When a woman is pregnant, the secretion of sex hormones increases, causing the cervical glands to proliferate and secrete more thick mucus. Furthermore, as the fetus grows, it presses on the mother's pelvic cavity and vagina, causing the nearby blood vessels to dilate and become congested, which also causes an increase in vaginal mucosal exudate, resulting in a normal physiological hyperactivity of vaginal secretions. No treatment is needed as it is not an infection.

It is normal to have a lot of vaginal discharge during pregnancy. Expectant mothers can keep the area dry and clean by washing:

1. Clean the vulva with warm water every day to keep it clean, but do not clean the vagina;

2. Use special bath towels and basins to avoid cross infection;

3. Change your underwear every day, wash it and dry it in the sun;

4. After each bowel movement, use a cotton pad soaked in boric acid water to wipe from front to back, but throw away the cotton pad that has been wiped once, and use a new cotton pad for the second wipe;

5. As the amount of vaginal discharge increases during pregnancy, if you find abnormal changes in its color, texture, and smell, you must not be careless. For the health of you and your baby, you should go to a regular hospital for relevant examinations and treatments in time, because these symptoms are often signs of gynecological inflammation.
