Can acupuncture cure dysmenorrhea?

In daily life, every woman has a few days when the menstrual cycle arrives more regularly. Some women don't feel anything during those days except bleeding from their vagina, while others experience symptoms of dysmenorrhea, and some even have difficulty breathing due to the pain. Women all know that brown sugar can relieve this symptom, but some people don't like to drink brown sugar. So can acupuncture cure dysmenorrhea?

Acupuncture can treat dysmenorrhea. Acupuncture only treats the symptoms and not the root cause. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, dysmenorrhea is mostly caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis, cold and dampness stagnation, physical weakness, and liver and kidney deficiency. Acupuncture only plays an auxiliary role in treatment. Don't worry too much. Dysmenorrhea is normal. In general, patients with dysmenorrhea should have a diversified diet and should not be picky eaters. They should often eat vegetables and fruits that have the effect of regulating qi and activating blood circulation, such as shepherd's purse, radish, orange, ginger, etc. Keep your emotions stable: long-term anxiety and tension will affect the hypothalamus through the central nervous system, and then affect ovarian function, leading to dysmenorrhea.

Body Acupuncture

1. Acupuncture point selection based on syndrome differentiation

Main acupoints: divided into 2 groups. 1. Chengjiang and Dazhui; 2. Below the 17th vertebra, Ashi point.

Acupoints: Chengshan, Sanjiaoshu, Shenshu, Qihaishu.

Governing Law

Take a group of main acupoints each time, and add or use auxiliary acupoints when the effect is not obvious. At the Chengjiang acupoint, insert the needle obliquely downward for 5 fen with a No. 28 1-inch needle. After the patient feels the needle sensation, quickly lift, insert, and twist the needle for about 30 minutes. Leave the needle in place for 30 minutes, and move the needle once every 10 minutes. Insert the needle subcutaneously at the Dazhui point and slowly advance the needle deep into the skin so that the needle sensation is transmitted to the lower back. Also, leave the needle in place for 30 minutes. Under the seventeenth vertebra, quickly insert a No. 28 1.5-2 inch needle into the subcutaneous tissue, aim the needle tip at the spinous process of the fifth lumbar vertebra, and insert and twist obliquely downward. The needle sensation should reach downward to the uterus and radiate toward the perineum. After the severe pain is relieved, continue to lift, insert, twist and transport the needle for 5-10 minutes depending on the condition, and leave the needle in place for 30 minutes. Use moxa rolls for gentle moxibustion on the Ashi point, and the distance should be such that the local area feels warm but not burning. Chengshan acupoints are taken on both sides. A 6-inch filiform needle is quickly inserted into the skin. The needle is slowly twisted and inserted until a strong needle sensation is felt. The needle is retained for 15 to 30 minutes. For other acupoints, also use the method of lifting, inserting and twisting to expand the needle sensation to the lower abdomen, and leave the needle in for 15 minutes. The above method should be applied once a day, regardless of the course of treatment, until recovery occurs.

2. Type-based acupuncture points

Main acupoints: divided into 3 groups according to syndrome types. 1. Qi stagnation and blood stasis: Zhongji, Qihai, Sanyinjiao; 2. Deficiency of both Qi and blood: Guanyuan, Zusanli, Xuehai; 3. Stagnation of cold and dampness: Mingmen, Daimai, Guilai.

Associated acupoints: Shenshu, Ciliao, Diji, Tianshu.

Governing Law

Select the main acupoints according to the diagnosed syndrome and add auxiliary acupoints as appropriate. Use a No. 28, 2-inch long needle to quickly break the skin, and then insert 1.5 inches under the skin. For acupuncture direction, the points on the abdomen and back are all pointing downward, and the points on the limbs are all pointing upward. Then apply the technique of tonifying and draining with lifting, inserting and small twisting. For the qi stagnation and blood stasis type, use the draining method; for the cold and dampness stagnation type, use the equal tonifying and draining method; for the qi and blood deficiency type, use the tonifying method. But the stimulation should be mild. The needles were retained for 20 to 30 minutes, and the needles were moved every 3 to 5 minutes. After acupuncture, Guanyuan, Zusanli and Guilai can be gently moxibustioned with moxa rolls for 15 minutes. Take once a day, regardless of treatment course, until recovery.

Skin acupuncture

The main acupoints are: Xingjian, Gongsun, Yinbai, Taichong, Sanyinjiao and Guanyuan.

Governing Law

All the main acupoints are taken. After routine disinfection, use the seven-star needle to perform pricking with wrist strength. The needle should be placed steadily and accurately, with the needle tip perpendicular to the skin. Tap 70 to 90 times per minute. Each acupoint should be tapped for about 1 minute, with moderate intensity stimulation until there is local slight bleeding. Treatment was given 3 days before each menstrual period, once a day, 3 times as a course of treatment, and observation was performed for 3 courses (three months).

Acupuncture has a significant therapeutic effect on primary dysmenorrhea. Treatment should start 3 to 5 days before menstruation until the end of menstruation. Continuous treatment for 2 to 3 menstrual cycles. Generally, the patient can recover basically. For secondary dysmenorrhea, after acupuncture therapy is used to alleviate the symptoms, the primary lesion should be diagnosed in time and appropriate treatment should be given. During menstruation, you should avoid mental stimulation and excessive fatigue, and prevent catching cold or eating too much raw or cold food.

After reading the above introduction on whether acupuncture can cure dysmenorrhea, I think everyone should have some understanding. In fact, acupuncture can cure dysmenorrhea. As long as the right acupoints are found, it will have a good therapeutic effect. Therefore, we must correctly understand and master the relevant knowledge in this area and bring the gospel to more women. Women should also pay more attention to their health.
