What causes malposition of the fetus?

There are many reasons that can cause malposition of the fetus, such as uterine deformity of the pregnant woman or tumor in the female pelvis. Malposition of the fetus is harmful to both the mother and the fetus, can easily lead to neonatal death, and can also cause difficult labor for the mother. Malposition of the fetus must be dealt with promptly. Malposition of the fetus can usually be detected through B-ultrasound examination 28 weeks after pregnancy, so it is very necessary to do pregnancy check-ups.

Maternal factors such as multiple births, intrauterine fibroids or congenital uterine abnormalities (uterine septum) and placenta previa. The causes of malposition of the fetus include uterine hypoplasia, uterine malformation, narrow pelvis, pelvic tumors, fetal malformation, polyhydramnios and other factors. Abnormal fetal position during delivery can cause dystocia, which often requires surgical intervention.

Please note that if not handled properly, it may even endanger the lives of the mother and fetus. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, it is mainly Qi and blood deficiency and Qi stagnation and blood stasis. Clinically, pregnant women are weak, insufficient in vital energy, tired and weak in limbs, and unable to promote the right position of the fetus; or because of excessive comfort in daily life, or being affected by cold evil, cold stagnation and blood stasis, Qi failure, blood obstruction, Qi stagnation and blood stasis; also because of fear and timidity during pregnancy, liver Qi stagnation, and Qi malfunction, which leads to abnormal fetal position.

Fetal factors can lead to malposition of the fetus, such as: premature birth, multiple births, polyhydramnios, macrosomia, and congenital developmental abnormalities of the fetus (chromosomal abnormalities, fetal hydrocephalus).

There are many specific types of malposition of the fetus, such as transverse presentation, breech presentation, etc. If it is a transverse position, delivery is generally done by caesarean section. If it is a breech position, it must be corrected actively, otherwise it is easy for the fetus to die due to suffocation during delivery. Currently, abnormal fetal position can be treated with acute moxibustion or electroacupuncture.
