What to do if you have pubic pain during pregnancy

Generally speaking, women who are pregnant have a high chance of experiencing pubic pain. According to clinical statistics, most women will experience pubic pain after pregnancy. Moreover, the pubic symptoms of some women also cause their daily lives to be seriously affected. Therefore, pubic pain after pregnancy needs to be treated as soon as possible. So, what should I do if I have pubic pain after pregnancy?

During pregnancy, the hormones relaxin and progesterone can help relax the ligaments, making the pelvis more elastic, giving the fetus more room to grow and facilitating delivery. Therefore, symphysis pubis separation occurs in almost all pregnant women. However, in some pregnant women, the sensitivity to the above hormones may be too high, causing the pubic symphysis area to be very loose; or because of problems with the alignment of the pelvis, this joint is under more pressure, leading to excessive separation of the pubic symphysis.

According to statistics in the literature, the normal distance between the two pubic bones of a non-pregnant woman is 4 to 5 mm. Once pregnant, under the action of hormones, the distance between the two will increase by at least 2 to 3 mm. Therefore, if the width between the pubic bones is less than 9 mm, it is within the normal range during pregnancy and there are usually no symptoms. Even if there is pain, it is not obvious. Once the distance between the two exceeds 5 mm, it is considered excessive separation of the pubic symphysis, which will cause more severe pain.

In terms of treatment, conservative treatment is generally used for pregnant women, mainly to relieve the pain caused by symphysis pubis separation.

1. Conservative treatment

1. Rest in bed.

2. Use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

3. Wear supportive clothing.

4. There are also patients abroad who receive correction through massage and osteopathy.

Alternative therapies

1. Acupuncture.

2. Traditional Chinese medicine.

3. Others have tried stimulating nerves through subcutaneous electrodes.

2. Medical Surgery

1. If the pain persists and is severe after delivery, steroids can be injected directly into the joint.

2. Use surgical methods to take some bones from the hip joint to make a plate to lock the pubic symphysis to fix the joint there.

As mentioned above, when women experience pubic pain after pregnancy, in addition to conservative treatment, they can also try Chinese medicine, acupuncture, surgery, and subcutaneous electrode nerve stimulation. These methods can also effectively relieve the symptoms of pubic pain.
