Bloodshot eyes and photophobia may be caused by irregular menstruation

Bloodshot eyes and photophobia may be caused by irregular menstruation

Some women experience symptoms such as eye congestion and conjunctival redness and swelling before menstruation. The symptoms gradually improve after menstruation and disappear after two or three days. This eye disease is more common in women with irregular menstruation.

Some eye diseases are unique to women and are closely related to women's menstruation. This is because estrogen metabolism disorders cause hypothalamic and autonomic nervous system dysfunction, causing eye blood vessels to dilate or affecting the sensory nerves of the eyes, resulting in symptoms such as eye congestion, swelling and pain, photophobia and tearing, and decreased vision. Once menstruation is regulated, this eye disease will disappear.

Menstrual physiology can affect eye health

Eye diseases related to menstrual physiology include:

Some women experience eye congestion, conjunctival redness and swelling before menstruation. The symptoms gradually improve after menstruation and disappear after two or three days. This eye disease is more common in women with irregular menstruation.

Some women with retrograde eye bleeding experience subconjunctival hemorrhage or even retinal congestion before their menstrual period, often accompanied by epistaxis. The bleeding stops quickly after the onset of menstruation. This eye disease is more common in women with little or no menstruation.

Some women experience eye swelling and pain three or four days before their period, often accompanied by headaches, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, back pain, abdominal pain and other symptoms, which gradually subside and disappear after menstruation. In some cases, there are also persistent photophobia and tearing, which are relieved after each menstrual period but will not disappear completely.

In addition, there are some women with amenorrhea or irregular menstruation who do not have redness or pain in their eyes, but only have decreased vision. For this disease, as long as you take menstruation-regulating medicine, your vision will recover as your menstruation becomes smoother.
