Diabetic retinopathy can easily lead to blindness

Diabetic retinopathy can easily lead to blindness

When you wake up,

Brother Chen from Fuzhou

I found that my right eye vision was seriously deteriorating.

Almost blind,

He rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The doctor told him,

This is related to his daily eating and sleeping habits.

It matters a lot.

Not long ago, Brother Chen had a large black shadow in the middle of his right eye and his vision was seriously impaired. He went to Fuzhou Aier Eye Hospital again. Examination revealed that Brother Chen had retinal hemorrhage in his right eye and diabetic retinopathy had developed to the moderate proliferative stage. He could only undergo surgery to remove the blood in the vitreous cavity as soon as possible before formulating the next treatment plan.

Doctor **** said that this was related to Brother Chen's history of diabetes for more than ten years. His uncontrolled diet and irregular lifestyle accelerated his condition.

My vision is declining and I wanted to have refractive surgery.

Diabetic retinopathy was diagnosed

In fact, this is not the first time that Brother Chen has come to Fuzhou Aier Eye Hospital. In March 2022, Brother Chen, who had more than 800 degrees of myopia in both eyes, walked into Fuzhou Aier Eye Hospital and wanted to have myopia surgery. However, after the examination, the director of the refractive department pointed out that his fundus was in poor condition and recommended further diagnosis at the fundus disease department.
As soon as he saw Brother Chen, Zheng Honghua, director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Fuzhou Aier Eye Hospital, asked, "Do you have diabetes?"

Brother Chen felt that this had nothing to do with myopia surgery, but he still answered seriously: "More than 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes during a physical examination, but I had never had my fundus checked before."

After the consultation and relevant examinations, Brother Chen was clearly diagnosed with "bilateral diabetic retinopathy" (abbreviated as "diabetic retinopathy").

Director Zheng Honghua explained that diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common and serious microvascular complications of diabetes. It is the main cause of vision loss in diabetic patients and can even lead to blindness in severe cases .

Brother Chen suddenly realized: his eyesight had been gradually declining in recent years, and it turned out that it was diabetic retinopathy that was causing the problem.

Fortunately, the disease was in the early stage, and Dr. Zheng Honghua promptly gave Brother Chen intravitreal drug injection and PRP treatment for both eyes. Brother Chen followed the doctor's advice and his diabetic retinopathy was well controlled.

But later, due to a job transfer, he missed the follow-up examination for several months. In addition, he stayed up all night for many consecutive days and drank alcohol at every dinner.

When he went to the hospital again, his right eye vision had severely deteriorated and his diabetic retinopathy had developed to the moderate proliferative stage. He needed surgery as soon as possible to remove the blood in the vitreous cavity and further explore the condition of the retina.

Regular eye examinations are important

At present, the number of diabetes patients in China ranks first in the world, with a total number of more than 140 million patients. Research reports show that about 1 in every 3 diabetes patients in China suffers from diabetic retinopathy , which has become the leading cause of blindness among adults in China.
The 5-year period of diabetes is a high-risk period for the development of diabetic retinopathy, and the longer the diabetes lasts, the greater the possibility of developing diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.

In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, there are generally no symptoms that can be perceived by the patient. Once symptoms such as decreased vision, distorted vision, fixed shadows in front of the eyes, and flashes in the eyes appear, the disease has entered the middle or late stages, and the damage to vision is irreversible.

Director Zheng Honghua reminded: "Various fundus diseases such as 'diabetic retinopathy' and macular degeneration can be prevented through early detection, so fundus examination is very important. "

A fundus photo can help you know about eye diseases early. In daily life, we should regularly take the elderly and other high-risk groups for fundus examinations, and strive to achieve early detection, early intervention, and early treatment.
