[Northern Xinjiang Science Popularization] Early diagnosis and early treatment to care for "ALS"

June 21st of every year is "World ALS Day". This year's June 21st is also the "Summer Solstice", when the northern hemisphere has the longest daylight hours. It aims to call on the world to work together to help ALS patients get rid of the pain of the disease as soon as possible and bask in the sun like normal people.

ALS is a type of motor neuron disease, medically known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The disease is caused by the invasion of motor neurons in the brain, brainstem and spinal cord. The patient's muscles gradually become weak and even paralyzed, and it also affects speaking, swallowing and breathing. The body's functions decline and gradually shrink and become weak, eventually paralyzed, and die from respiratory failure. ALS requires early diagnosis, early treatment, and multidisciplinary treatment. If suspected symptoms occur, you should go to an experienced neurology department for examination and evaluation as soon as possible. Currently, internationally approved drugs for the treatment of ALS can delay the progression of the disease to a certain extent and prolong the patient's survival.

In addition to etiological treatment, it is more important to carry out comprehensive treatment through some correct nursing methods to prolong survival and improve the patient's quality of life. It is recommended to eat a high-protein diet and strengthen nutritional support; encourage patients to exercise and move appropriately, but be careful not to be overly fatigued; when patients are unable to carry out sufficient self-activity, caregivers should help them to carry out passive limb activities, combined with rehabilitation, physical therapy and other means to prevent complications such as limb stiffness, spasms, and lower extremity venous thrombosis. From the onset of the disease, patients have experienced a heavy psychological and spiritual blow. Patients and their families should understand the treatment of the disease, help them receive treatment and rehabilitation training, and build confidence in defeating the disease.
