Is there anyone around you who smokes?

Have you ever been forced to breathe in secondhand smoke?

Are you bothered by secondhand smoke?

Secondhand smoke is the smoke released into the environment during smoking. There are more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, including hundreds of toxic chemicals and about 70 chemicals that can cause cancer.

Secondhand smoke contains chemicals such as benzene, toluene, butane, cadmium, ammonium and hydrogen cyanide.

Scientific research has shown that exposure to secondhand smoke is harmful to the health of non-smokers and may cause cancer.

Secondhand smoke exposure can cause cancer

There is ample evidence that exposure to secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer.

Families with people exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of lung cancer than families without secondhand smoke exposure.

75% of lung cancer patients are ultimately traced back to smoking, and the greater the exposure to secondhand smoke and the longer the exposure, the higher the risk of lung cancer. For every 10 years of secondhand smoke exposure, the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers increases by 11%. When the exposure period reaches 30 years, the risk increases by 35%.

In addition, studies have shown that the risk of colorectal cancer among people exposed to secondhand smoke is 1.14 times that of those not exposed to secondhand smoke, and that male people exposed to secondhand smoke have a higher risk of colorectal cancer than female people exposed to secondhand smoke.

Exposure to secondhand smoke may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Effects of secondhand smoke exposure on children and pregnant women

If there is a smoker in the family, children will be more likely to suffer from diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, allergic rhinitis, acute leukemia, and otitis media.

Studies have shown that children who are exposed to secondhand smoke for a long time will have a significant impact on their intellectual development, and their learning abilities in memory, reading, mathematics and other areas will be limited.

Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke for a long time have lower height and weight than those who are not exposed, and their risk of developing attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, etc. is 1.5 times that of non-exposed children.

Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke for a long time are also more likely to become addicted to smoking.

Pregnant women exposed to secondhand smoke may suffer from premature birth, neonatal malformations, and sudden neonatal death.

Studies have shown that the average weight of newborns born to pregnant women exposed to secondhand smoke is reduced by 31-33 grams; the risk of sudden infant death syndrome for infants exposed to secondhand smoke after birth is 3.5 times that of infants not exposed to secondhand smoke; a study of the Chinese population found that when pregnant women are exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy, the risk of birth defects in their newborns is 3.62 times that of those not exposed, and most birth defects are congenital malformations, including neural tube defects, cleft lip and palate, etc.

How to reduce or avoid the harm of secondhand smoke?

01

Smokers should quit smoking as soon as possible or reduce smoking, refrain from smoking in public places or workplaces, and protect the rights of non-smokers to maintain their own health.

02If non-smokers need to frequently go to places with secondhand smoke, they can try to reduce the exposure time.

What is more important than health?

Say no to smoking! Say no to secondhand smoke!
