Prescription source: Shenqi Pills in Synopsis of the Golden Chamber, minus cinnamon twig and processed aconite, and replace the dried rehmannia root in the original recipe with cooked rehmannia root.

Drug composition: Rehmannia root, Cornus officinalis, Chinese yam, Alisma orientalis, Poria cocos, and Paeonia suffruticosa root.

Functions and indications: Nourishes yin and tonifies kidney. Used for kidney yin deficiency, dizziness, tinnitus, soreness of waist and knees, bone steaming, hot flashes, night sweats, spermatorrhea, and thirst.

Liuwei Dihuang Wan and I are of the same generation, and we are both descendants of Shenqi Wan in the Golden Chamber. However, I am not as famous as Liuwei Dihuang Wan, because it is good for eugenics and has a large population, forming a large family of Dihuang Wan. My specialty is to invigorate kidney qi and promote diuresis, but I am not an aphrodisiac!

In the formula, cooked rehmannia root, wine-soaked cornus fruit and Chinese yam work together to nourish the three yin of kidney, liver and spleen, with emphasis on nourishing the kidney; oriental water chestnut, poria and peony bark harmonize the liver and spleen, reduce and drain kidney turbidity, and use drainage to help nourish. This is the famous "three nourishments and three drainages" method, nourishing without stagnation, and draining without hurting yin. Then use a little warm cinnamon and processed aconite to "ignite", steaming the kidney's yin essence with its pungent and hot nature, generating kidney qi, and promoting the kidney to start working.
