The disappearance of "it"! If your presbyopia suddenly disappears, it may not be a good thing

The disappearance of "it"! If your presbyopia suddenly disappears, it may not be a good thing

Everyone is familiar with "presbyopia", which usually manifests as not affecting distant objects, but not being able to see clearly when looking at mobile phones, books and newspapers, etc., and needs to be viewed from a distance. "Presbyopia" is also called "old vision", which is a physiological phenomenon that occurs when people enter middle age and old age.

If you suddenly can see things clearly up close, as if the symptoms have been alleviated, does it mean that your presbyopia is gone?

Is this really the case? What is going on?

Cataract and presbyopia experts from Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital will answer your questions

Lei Rong, deputy chief physician

Introduction : He has been engaged in ophthalmology clinical work for more than 15 years and has rich clinical experience. He has completed more than 5,000 cataract surgeries of various types. He has successfully completed more than 1,000 femtosecond laser cataract surgeries. He is good at the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes combined with cataracts and has published several related papers in domestic core journals.

ask

I feel like my presbyopia has disappeared, what’s going on?

Director Lei Rong pointed out that this may be caused by cataracts . In the early stage of cataracts, due to the increase in density of the lens, it gradually becomes cloudy, causing the refractive state of the eyeball to slowly change to "myopia". Reading glasses are corrected with "convex lenses", while myopia glasses are corrected with "concave lenses". When the two are superimposed, things close to you become clearer, as if the original presbyopia symptoms have been alleviated or disappeared. In fact, the truth behind it is that you have cataracts.

ask

What other symptoms do cataracts have?

In addition to alleviating presbyopia symptoms , you should also be alert to cataracts if the following situations occur.

Vision gradually blurs. Blurred vision is the main symptom of cataracts, and sometimes you may also feel that there are halos around light or that the colors of objects are not bright enough. If a cataract patient drives at night, the headlights of oncoming vehicles will be too dazzling and make him feel uncomfortable.

Dark shadows appear in front of the eyes. Dark shadows in front of the eyes are also one of the early symptoms of cataracts. In the early stage of cataracts, patients may have fixed positions and unchanged shapes of dot-shaped or sheet-shaped shadows in front of their eyes. It is different from floaters caused by vitreous opacities, in which the shadows are movable, appearing and disappearing from time to time, and the shapes are changeable.

Day blindness or night blindness. If the lens opacity starts in the central part, when the light is strong during the day and the pupil is constricted, light is blocked from entering the eye, resulting in day blindness. If the lens opacity is located in the peripheral part, the dark light is blocked from entering the equatorial retina at night, and the rod cells of the equatorial retina are responsible for night vision, resulting in night blindness. This is also one of the early symptoms of cataracts.

Abnormal color vision. When people look at lights, colorful circles or halos will appear around the lights, similar to the rainbow in summer. Medically, this is called "rainbow vision". When the "rainbow vision" phenomenon increases, it may also be one of the symptoms of early cataracts.

ask

How are cataracts treated?

Cataracts, or cloudy lenses, are almost impossible to reverse, and there is currently no specific medicine for cataracts. Do not trust drugs or health products that claim to be effective in treating cataracts. Director Lei Rong reminded that surgery is an effective treatment for cataracts . If cataracts are allowed to develop, they can cause complete blindness in the late stages, so it is recommended to undergo surgery as soon as possible . When there are diseases other than cataracts, the timing of surgery should be determined based on the surgical method and overall condition, and the timing of surgery should be determined by consulting a professional doctor.
