[A Fun Anatomist] Can’t wink? You can always blink!

Speaking of winks, does everyone subconsciously think of the beautiful wink of Zixia Fairy in A Chinese Odyssey? Cute and playful, it touched the editor's heart at first sight⁄(⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)⁄

Originally, wink referred to "winking or making a joking expression", but with the popularity of wink in fan circles, winking has gradually evolved into a way to show personal charm.

Next, let me show you how to make a perfect wink.

The joy of anatomy

Winking requires well-developed eye muscles, including the orbicularis oculi muscle used when closing the eyes and the levator palpebrae superioris muscle used when opening the eyes.

The main reason why wink fails is that the eye that wants to be closed will close the other eyelid synchronously, making both eyes closed.

The orbicularis oculi muscle is located in the pink area in the picture and is used to close the eyes.

The levator palpebrae superioris muscle is located in red in the picture and is used to open the eyes.

Practice Method

1 Press your forehead hard with your hands and open your eyes wide for ten seconds.

Remember not to exert force on the forehead or eyebrows, but on the muscles around the eyes!

2 Hold one eye still with your hand and blink the other one, ten times each, until you get used to moving the left and right eyes separately.

3 You can do eye exercises to relax your eye muscles and make them less tense.

Of course, not everyone has to learn to wink. Our daily blinking also has a great effect.

Normal people blink 10 to 20 times a minute. When staring at electronic devices for a long time, the frequency of blinking will be greatly reduced, at least 4 to 5 times a minute. Normal blinking can:

01Clean and moisten the eyeballs

When your eyes feel dry, you will automatically blink and shed tears. The tears can be evenly spread to the conjunctiva, cornea, etc., having a moisturizing and cleansing effect.

02Protect your eyes

When the eyes are irritated by flying insects, dust, etc., the eyes will blink continuously due to instinctive reaction to resist the flying insects and dust from invading the eyes to avoid damaging the eyeballs.

03Relieve eye fatigue

It weakens the intensity of light entering the eyes, avoids visual fatigue, and effectively protects eyesight. "Blinking" can also relax the eyelid levator muscle in the eye, so that the eyes are not sore or astringent.

If you stare at a computer or mobile phone all day or use your eyes for a long time, you should pay attention to blinking more often. Because your eyes are fixed and your mind is highly distracted, you often forget to blink, which can lead to dry eyes and other eye diseases.
