Twitter: 1Q21 revenue of US$1.036 billion, turning loss into profit year-on-year

On April 30, 2021, Twitter (TWTR.US) released its first quarter 2021 financial report ending March 31, 2021. Data showed that the company's Q1 revenue was US$1.036 billion, compared with US$808 million in the same period last year, a year-on-year increase of 28%; net profit was US$68.005 million, compared with a loss of US$8.396 million in the same period last year.

Basic earnings per share were $0.09, compared with a loss of $0.01 in the same period last year; diluted earnings per share were $0.08, compared with a loss of $0.01 in the same period last year.

The company had cash and equivalents of $4.249 billion at the end of the quarter, compared with $3.463 billion in the same period last year.

By business segment, advertising business revenue was US$899 million, compared with US$682 million in the same period last year, a year-on-year increase of 32%; data licensing and other business revenue was US$137 million, compared with US$125 million in the same period last year, a year-on-year increase of 9%.

The number of monetizable daily active users (mDAU) was 199 million, lower than the market expectation of 200 million, and compared with 166 million in the same period last year, a year-on-year increase of 20%.

The company expects second-quarter revenue of $980 million to $1.08 billion, while the market expects $1.05 billion; it expects mDAU to show low double-digit growth for the rest of the year, and the increase in mDAUs in the second quarter may be low.

As of press time, the company's U.S. stock fell 11.23% after hours on Thursday to $57.78.
