Counterpoint: Apple accounts for 57% of global high-end smartphone sales in Q2 2021

The latest research report released by market research firm Counterpoint Research stated that Apple still dominates the high-end mobile phone market. The report pointed out that since the fourth quarter of 2020, iPhone manufacturers have occupied more than 50% of the smartphone market priced above $400. In the second quarter of 2021, sales of high-end mobile phones increased by 46% year-on-year, and Apple accounted for 57% of the total sales.

Another interesting finding is the strong momentum of the iPhone 12. Consumer demand for 5G connectivity appears to be growing, which is believed to have driven the increase in iPhone 12 sales, with Apple reporting a 74% year-over-year increase in sales in the high-end segment. It remains to be seen to what extent the upcoming iPhone 13 series can help Apple maintain the popular trend.

Samsung, by contrast, continues to lose ground in the segment. While Samsung still leads in terms of overall smartphone market share, the South Korean company has been unable to overtake Apple in the growing and more profitable high-end market. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are priced lower than their predecessors, which could help the South Korean giant rebound. Both devices have been quite successful recently.

Xiaomi and Huawei are currently competing for the third place, with the two currently accounting for 6% of high-end mobile phone sales in the second quarter of 2021. The former has a strong influence in China, where they only lose to Apple. However, the Mi 11 series has helped Xiaomi expand in the European and even Chinese markets, approaching Huawei in market share.
