Counterpoint: iPad sales using Apple's self-developed M-series chips are expected to reach 20% in 2022

Apple is reportedly serious about turning its iPad lineup into something unrivaled in the category, not that it has been struggling to do this before, but the company's plan could take it to another level. That plan is to develop more M-series chips designed for these tablets. According to the latest report, 20% of all iPads sold next year will feature an M-series SoC.

New report suggests Apple may also use its M1X or M2 chip in iPad next year

Counterpoint Research believes that in 2022, one in every five iPads sold will contain an M-series chip. If you notice, the report doesn't specifically mention the M1, which is present in the current-generation iPad Pro as well as other products like the redesigned 24-inch iMac. This suggests that Apple may be working on a more powerful chipset to make its way into newer models. Given the company's engineering prowess in making these chips, it shouldn't be difficult to cram a powerful chip into a newer, thinner iPad Pro.

Early M1 iPad Pro benchmarks show it's 50% faster than the 2020 model; even faster than the 16-inch MacBook Pro. At least in the performance department, Apple has achieved very impressive results, so we can expect history to repeat itself in 2022.

The M1 iPad Pro will be launched in key markets such as the United States around mid-May. It may take longer in other markets. Since the market demand for M1-based iPads will be very high, considering Apple’s warning of chip shortages in the second half of 2021, it is estimated that the share of M-series-based iPads will remain close to one-tenth of shipments this year. For the second half of this year and next year, it is estimated that almost one in five iPads shipped will use an M-series SoC. ”

With creative pro apps like Photoshop and Illustrator for iPad already revamped and available to regular users, it may not be long before pro users can edit high-quality videos and really take advantage of the 16GB of RAM and the horsepower of the M1. Of course, the M1 is just the beginning, and Apple is said to be working on its successor. According to various reports and rumors, the company may call it the M1X or M2.
