Why do paid apps still dominate? – Infographic

It seems like the entire internet industry is transitioning from a paid model to a freemium model. Freemium includes not only online games, but also websites and mobile apps. While many people have taken the freemium model for granted, and app developers are looking for ways to monetize their free apps through in-app purchases, mobile ads, prizes, and offers, it’s important to note that we’re still in the typical transition phase, with free apps still accounting for less than half of all mobile apps on the top platforms.

From the infographic below, we can see that the proportion of apps priced at or above $50 is about 0.3%, the proportion of apps priced between $1 and $50 is 32.6%, 22% of apps are priced between $0 and $0.99, and the proportion of free apps is 45%. That is to say, more than half of mobile apps still require payment to download.

The infographic also shows that the top 50 app developers only contribute 5% of the content in the app store. Perhaps part of the reason why they are top developers is that they have few products and high product quality. It is also because of this that a large number of junk apps have emerged.

Among the tens of thousands of developers, only a few have made real achievements and become famous. It seems that high-volume application output does not have much substantive significance. The key to the free value-added model is to convert free consumers into paying consumers. It is a process of setting up the stage before performing the show. If the stage is not set up, there is no way to perform the show well.
