Do you know your cardiorespiratory capacity?

Do you know your cardiorespiratory capacity?

Cardiopulmonary function refers to the ability of the human heart to pump blood and the lungs to inhale oxygen. The abilities of both directly affect the activities of organs and muscles throughout the body. To test cardiopulmonary function, the best way is exercise testing. Because the human body has a very large demand for oxygen during exercise, exercise testing can best "test" the activity of the heart and lungs.

Cardiopulmonary exercise test 01 Definition Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is to evaluate the response of the heart, lungs and other organs to exercise by monitoring the body's oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide output (CO2), heart rate (HR), minute ventilation (VE), etc. during exercise. It is different from electrocardiogram, cardiac ultrasound, etc.

Four stages of cardiopulmonary exercise testing

Why choose cardiopulmonary exercise testing?

Advantages of cardiopulmonary exercise testing

1. CPET can be performed in outpatient clinics without causing any damage to the human body. It is a non-invasive and safe testing method.

2. CPET monitoring has high sensitivity and little subjective factors among the test subjects;

3. Simultaneous assessment of cardiopulmonary function levels and quantitative grading helps in the differential diagnosis of shortness of breath and fatigue. It is a comprehensive and unique diagnostic tool.

Indications

1. Exercise tolerance assessment

Determine whether functional impairment or movement impairment exists; the cause and pathophysiological mechanism of movement limitation.

2. Assessment of patients with cardiovascular disease

Functional assessment and prognosis of patients with heart failure; formulation of exercise prescription and exercise training monitoring in cardiac rehabilitation.

3. Patient Assessment for Respiratory Diseases

COPD; pulmonary vascular disease.

4. Other clinical applications

Preoperative evaluation: lung resection, abdominal surgery in the elderly; assessment of impairment and disability.

Who should not undergo cardiopulmonary exercise testing?

Absolute contraindications

1. Acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina and severe arrhythmia;

2. History of syncope;

3. Common active infective endocarditis in cardiology: severe aortic stenosis, acute heart failure, acute pulmonary embolism or pulmonary infarction, and lower limb thrombosis;

4. It cannot be performed if the patient has a dissecting aneurysm;

5. Respiratory diseases: uncontrolled asthma, acute respiratory failure, and severe hypoxemia, etc.

Relative contraindications

1. Stenosis of the left main coronary artery;

2. Moderate stenotic heart valve disease;

3. If the systolic blood pressure is greater than 200 mmHg, the patient's blood pressure must be controlled before proceeding.

This test is non-invasive, quantitative and sensitive. It can predict the risks of healthy people in special environments, such as exercise and plateaus; observe changes in blood pressure during exercise to predict the risk of hypertension in the future; assist in the diagnosis of coronary heart disease; assess surgical risks and the timing of heart surgery or transplantation; guide chronic disease management, including exercise risk assessment, specifying exercise prescriptions, and evaluating the effectiveness of exercise rehabilitation; guide exercise and fitness, and help develop individualized exercise prescriptions to achieve optimal exercise intensity and minimum exercise risk.
