What should I replace when my car's shock absorber is hard? Is it better to have a hard or soft shock absorber?

Many people pay more attention to the comfort when buying a car. After all, when traveling, a comfortable driving experience can make the journey smoother, which requires the car to have good shock absorption performance. Sometimes the shock absorber feels a bit hard. If you want to improve this situation, what parts do you generally need to replace? Is it better for the shock absorber to be hard or soft?

What should I replace the car shock absorber?

The vehicle's shock absorbers are too hard, which may be caused by reasons such as excessive viscosity of the oil inside the shock absorber, shock absorber spring failure, or quality problems with the shock absorber itself.

To save money, you can replace the shock absorber spring. You can first measure the diameter of the spring, and then find a spring of the same style, height, and number of turns with a slightly shorter diameter to replace it. It is best to test whether the rebound force of the new spring is different from that of the old spring. The test method can be to go to a repair shop and ask them to remove the spring of the shock absorber, and then press the new and old springs hard to test whether they are softer, or ask the repair shop to help you test it. The shock absorber is prone to oil leakage over time, so it is more reliable to replace a complete set of shock absorbers and springs.

Is it better to have a hard or soft car shock absorber?

In fact, it is difficult to directly describe whether the shock absorber is soft or hard. Most people think that a good shock absorber should be "tough". It should be flexible when it hits the speed bump, as if there is a thin layer of cotton in the middle. It should be able to hold the car body after it comes down, and it will not bounce up and down. It should be hard when turning, and it can support the car body, reduce the body roll, give the driver confidence, and the car body will not twist when it returns to the center. In short, a good shock absorber is tough, crisp, and has a sense of luxury.

Is the problem of car shock absorption the shock absorption or the spring?

The hardness of shock absorption is mostly related to the shock absorption spring and tire. It can be changed to 7 inches or 8 inches, depending on the original car. In addition, better tires also have a certain buffering effect on shock absorption. Finally, check the tire pressure. It must be within the specified range. If the air pressure is too high, the vehicle will feel bouncing when driving.

You can determine whether the shock absorber needs to be replaced based on its condition:

1. After driving 10km on a road with poor road conditions, stop and touch the shock absorber shell. If it is not hot enough, there is no resistance inside the shock absorber, and the shock absorber does not work. At this time, you can add appropriate lubricating oil and then test it. If the shell is hot, there is a lack of oil inside the shock absorber, and sufficient oil should be added; otherwise, the shock absorber is ineffective.

2. Press the bumper tightly and release it. If the car jumps 2 to 3 times, the shock absorber is working well.

3. When the car is driving slowly and brakes suddenly, if the car vibrates severely, it means that there is a problem with the shock absorber.

4. Remove the shock absorber and stand it upright, then clamp the lower end of the connecting ring in a vise. Pull the damping rod several times. At this time, there should be a stable resistance. The pull-up resistance should be greater than the resistance under pressure. If the resistance is unstable or there is no resistance, it may be due to lack of oil inside the shock absorber or damage to the valve parts, which should be repaired or replaced.
