What are the precautions for mastectomy?

Not all accessory breasts need to be removed. Generally, if they are soft and have no other adverse symptoms, they do not need surgical removal. They can be adjusted through exercise and bras. However, if they are accompanied by symptoms such as hyperplasia, tumors, etc., they need to be removed. After surgical removal, pay attention to the cleanliness of the wound to avoid infection.

Timing of surgery

It is generally believed that asymptomatic and soft accessory breasts can be checked regularly and do not require immediate surgical treatment. Usually it can be improved through exercise or adjustable bras. When the following two situations occur, surgical removal of the accessory breast can be considered.

Those who have pain or symptoms such as hyperplasia, tumors, and accessory nipple discharge that affect their lives need to consider surgery.

For those with larger axillary accessory breasts that affect their appearance and dressing, surgical treatment can be performed.

Some women may accidentally find a lump in their armpit that is soft and feels like cotton. When the breasts swell and hurt before or during menstruation, the lumps in the armpits may also swell and hurt, and may even be mistaken for a "tumor" in the breast that has metastasized to the armpit. In fact, this may be an accessory breast. Accessory breasts usually begin to develop after adulthood, during pregnancy or lactation. In a few people, their development becomes apparent only after the age of 40.

Since accessory breasts are incomplete remnants of embryonic degeneration, they are smaller than normal breasts. Some accessory breasts have nipples, areolas, and glands and can secrete milk during lactation; some have only glands but no nipples, and local lumps form. It is often located in the front and lower part of the armpit, like a ball of fat. Others have only small, underdeveloped nipples and no glands. Very few people may have accessory breasts in the abdomen, vulva, etc. But the most common occurrence is in the armpit or the upper or lower part of the normal breast. It often occurs bilaterally, but can also occur unilaterally. According to statistics, women with accessory breasts account for approximately two to four percent of adult women.

Accessory breast surgery can improve the adverse pathological symptoms of accessory breasts. Most accessory breasts are caused by congenital accessory breast deformities, while some patients' accessory breasts are caused by adverse acquired stimuli. Experts believe that early excision surgery is needed to correct the accessory breast symptoms. After professional accessory breast surgery, the patient can return to normal in a short period of time and achieve the ideal accessory breast surgery removal effect.

Surgical method

1. Anesthetics are injected before surgery. Generally, intravenous anesthesia is used, and local anesthesia is rarely used. This is because local anesthesia is not conducive to distinguishing fat and accessory breast tissue during surgery, which brings great trouble to the surgery.

2. The incision during surgery should be as hidden as possible so as not to affect the appearance. Generally, the incision is made at the outer edge of the pectoralis major muscle, so that the surgical scar will not be visible when wearing clothes after the operation, and it is also beneficial for the healing of the incision after the operation. After the operation, a drainage tube and negative pressure suction need to be placed on the incision, which can usually be removed three days after the operation.

3. During the operation, the skin flap should be moved to the edge of the mass to ensure that the resection range is large enough, so that the surgical effect can be guaranteed. The operation must remove the accessory breast in its entirety, without leaving any part behind to cause recurrence.

4. If the patient's accessory breast has already caused accessory breast cancer, then during the accessory breast removal surgery, the 5-centimeter area around the edge of the accessory breast should be removed.

5. After the operation, a drainage tube should be placed in the wound to facilitate skin regrowth.

How I feel after surgery

Accessory breast removal surgery is not complicated and can usually be performed under local anesthesia. The incision for accessory breast removal surgery can be designed in the front of the armpit. After separating the subcutaneous tissue through the skin incision, all breast tissue of the accessory breast is removed. If the nipple and areola are present at the same time, they should also be removed together. After the accessory breast removal surgery, pressure bandage is required for seven days before the stitches are removed. It generally does not have a significant impact on daily work.

There are obvious pain symptoms; the pain symptoms affect the patient's life. Patients with accessory breast fibroids or nipple discharge should undergo surgical treatment. Accessory breasts are a type of multiple breast deformity that affects appearance. For larger anterior axillary accessory breasts that affect the appearance and clothing of the patient, and if the patient has an urgent need for surgery, surgical treatment can be accepted. If there is an obvious nodule inside; if there is accessory breast fibroma, nipple discharge, obvious swelling and pain in the lump, and there is a certain possibility of malignancy; if the lump has increased significantly in recent time, surgery may be considered. The diagnosis is unclear and other tumors cannot be excluded.
