The process of egg retrieval for IVF

The process of egg retrieval for IVF

With the development of medical technology, many infertile couples no longer have only the option of adopting children, but can also undergo in vitro fertilization to cultivate their own children. The traditional Chinese concept of continuing the family line has led more families to choose in vitro fertilization. Next, let us understand the basic situation of in vitro fertilization surgery and the related process of egg extraction in women.

What is IVF egg retrieval

In vitro fertilization is a surgical procedure used to treat infertility. But it is not done in a real test tube, so how is it done? What is egg retrieval for IVF?

In fact, egg retrieval for in vitro fertilization is to remove mature eggs from the female's ovaries and then combine them with sperm from the male. This process is carried out outside, and of course it requires the help of a test tube. The role of the test tube is to combine the retrieved eggs and sperm together to form a fertilized egg. After the fertilized egg is formed, it can be transplanted into the woman's uterus to allow it to grow and develop inside the woman's uterus.

However, this does not mean that all IVF can be successful. The success of IVF transplantation surgery is closely related to the quality of the sperm of the male partner of the couple. If the sperm survival rate is low, IVF will be useless. In order to better improve the success rate of in vitro fertilization transplantation, women need to undergo a preliminary physical examination to ensure that they have the relevant physical conditions.

How to retrieve eggs for IVF

1. Clean the vagina from the day of HCG injection, twice a day. Antibiotics are used during the peri-puncture period to prevent infection on the puncture day; eggs are retrieved 34 to 36 hours after HCG injection.

2. Anesthetics should be injected before the operation to avoid pain during egg retrieval.

3. The patient takes the lithotomy position.

4. Before entering the room, scrub the vulva, vagina, and cervix with 5% PVP-iodine, rinse thoroughly with saline, and lay a towel. Normal saline solution containing gentamicin (160kU/500ml) can also be used to wash the vagina and cervix. Catheterization is performed when necessary. After entering the room, the vagina and cervix are rinsed with saline.

5. Use a non-toxic special condom or penis condom to protect the ultrasound vaginal probe. In addition, install the puncture needle guide. Through vaginal ultrasound, you can observe the thickness of the uterus and endometrium, the position of the ovaries, and the number and size of follicles.

6. Use a special puncture needle with a strong echo needle to retrieve eggs. The commonly used ones are single-chamber and double-chamber. If the double-lumen tube is used, it needs to be connected to a device for flushing follicles. Connect the puncture needle to the negative pressure device and adjust the pressure to -15~-18kPa.

7. Under ultrasonic monitoring, the puncture needle will enter the follicle through the vagina. Of course, you must find a mature egg when taking it out. At this time, you can twist the puncture needle to obtain the egg.

8. After puncture, the patient should rest properly and generally does not need to take antibiotics or hemostatic drugs.
