Berberine for the treatment of cystic ovary

Berberine for the treatment of cystic ovary

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a relatively common gynecological disease for women. If a girl suffers from polycystic ovary, she may experience irregular menstruation and may also have more male characteristics. Polycystic ovary can be treated with mugwort, but polycystic ovary can also be treated with berberine. Let me introduce it in detail below.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common gynecological endocrine disease with an incidence rate of 5%-10% among Chinese women. The main symptoms of patients include irregular menstruation such as oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, and disorders, and manifestations of hyperandrogenism such as acne and hirsutism. Overweight and obesity are also common. In addition to endocrine disorders, clinically it is found that a considerable number of patients have varying degrees of abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism, impaired fasting blood glucose and/or abnormal glucose tolerance, hyperlipidemia, etc. If not discovered in time and actively intervened, the condition will gradually develop into diabetes, hypertension within 5-10 years, and the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke will also be significantly increased. Therefore, patients with PCOS need to screen for and treat metabolic abnormalities while adjusting their menstruation.

Studies have found that insulin resistance is the pathological basis of metabolic abnormalities in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. The first treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome with metabolic abnormalities is not medication, but lifestyle adjustments: including reducing weight and body fat, dietary adjustments and exercise, which are the most important basic treatments. On this basis, doctors will prescribe relevant drug treatments according to the patient's metabolic level type. Commonly used drugs include metformin, pioglitazone, acarbose, etc., among which metformin is currently the most widely used in clinical practice. However, metformin has obvious gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, fatigue, etc., making it difficult for patients to adhere to the medication.

In 1986, Chinese scholars used berberine to treat diabetes and found that it was effective for patients who did not respond well to oral hypoglycemic drugs. In recent years, many studies have reported that berberine can be used to treat metabolic abnormalities in polycystic ovary syndrome. Compared with metformin, berberine has a similar blood sugar lowering effect and a better lipid-lowering effect than metformin, with relatively small side effects, mainly causing excessive gastric acid, constipation, and occasional nausea and vomiting. The mechanism by which berberine treats metabolic disorders is still unclear. The intestinal flora is the largest microecological system in the human body and is very important for maintaining human metabolism and immune functions. Intestinal flora imbalance is associated with a variety of metabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc. Scientists speculate that berberine may have a therapeutic effect by improving the structure of intestinal flora.

Therefore, the use of berberine to treat polycystic ovary syndrome is not a joke, but an old medicine with new uses. Berberine can not only be used for bacterial gastroenteritis, but also can be used to treat metabolic abnormalities in polycystic ovary syndrome. The next time a doctor prescribes berberine for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, don’t worry that the doctor has prescribed the wrong medicine.
