What is the role of colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a common examination method, which mainly uses instruments to check the environment inside the vagina to see if there are problems such as bacterial infection. Nowadays, many women often suffer from gynecological diseases and don’t know what to do. If they have a disease, they need to be diagnosed in time to avoid unnecessary trouble. So what is the role of colposcopy? How to use colposcopy to check the condition inside the vagina?

A colposcope is a speculum for observing lesions in the lower reproductive tract. This speculum has developed from a simple binocular magnifier to a microscopic colposcope, electronic colposcope and computerized colposcope. In the past 30 years, colposcopy has been gradually and widely used in clinical practice at home and abroad, and has been recognized as an indispensable means to improve the quality of diagnosis of lower reproductive tract lesions. Gynecologists have realized that visual observation, cytological screening, and biopsy when in doubt are not comprehensive enough. Biopsy is blind because there is no lesion localization measure, which often affects the positive detection rate. The positive detection rate can be greatly improved if the biopsy is performed under colposcopy positioning.

With the continuous development of optoelectronic technology, photography technology and computer application, colposcopy is not only of certain value in the diagnosis of cervical, vaginal and vulvar lesions, but also plays a greater role in tracking and following up the treatment effects and in further studying the etiology, pathogenesis and pathological process of tumor occurrence and development.

Colposcopy also has its limitations. It cannot see lesions in the cervical canal. It cannot perform colposcopy evaluation when diagnosing lesions in the atrophic cervical canal after menopause, or when the squamous-columnar junction is retracted into the cervical canal and is difficult to expose.

A colposcope is an instrument for examining the vagina. It can detect vaginitis or vaginal diseases. Early detection and treatment can avoid delaying the disease. In fact, colposcope examination is very important for us, so we recommend that female friends protect their vagina in daily life. If there is any problem with the vagina, they need to go to the hospital for examination.
