Can I get pregnant if I have ulcerative colitis?

Women with ulcerative colitis can get pregnant, but we generally do not recommend getting pregnant at this time because pregnancy will hinder the treatment of the disease. Therefore, we recommend that you prepare for conception after the disease is cured and based on your body's recovery. For female friends with ulcerative colitis, if you are pregnant, you must pay special attention to the safety of medication use, otherwise it may easily lead to fetal malformation or miscarriage.

When ulcerative colitis is in its active phase, pregnancy often aggravates the symptoms of colitis, especially in the first three months of pregnancy, although a small number of patients may improve. When ulcerative colitis reaches remission, 25%-52% of patients have more relapses within the first 3 months of pregnancy and less relapses in the postpartum period; the spontaneous abortion rate is high; some patients have severe and prolonged disease after induced labor.

In general, patients with ulcerative colitis should delay pregnancy until their disease has been effectively controlled for more than one year. If the disease is not effectively controlled or is controlled for less than one year before pregnancy, the condition may worsen during pregnancy or early after delivery. Data show that approximately 1/3 of patients with inactive ulcerative colitis and 2/3 of pregnant women with ulcerative colitis experience worsening of their condition during pregnancy, and approximately 10% of pregnant women may experience spontaneous abortion and terminate their pregnancy. Acute ulcerative colitis occurs during pregnancy, usually within the first 3 months of pregnancy; the condition is often moderate or extremely severe during delivery and the postpartum period.

The occurrence of colitis has some impact on women's pregnancy, but if treated in time, it will not cause much harm to people's bodies. Therefore, we need to pay more attention to the aggravation of diseases during pregnancy on weekdays. At the same time, we must pay more attention to pain after non-strenuous exercise, go to the hospital for examination in time, and listen to the experts' opinions.

Through this article’s analysis of whether pregnancy is possible with ulcerative colitis, we should all know that it is very bad to get pregnant while being sick. Although the disease will not be transmitted to the child, it will make the mother more vulnerable and unable to receive timely treatment. In addition, ulcerative colitis will cause the fetus to be unable to fully absorb the mother’s nutrients.
