What causes vulvar itching and how to treat it?

Excessive sweating, moisture and immersion in the vulva or its surroundings often cause itching; itching caused by local contact allergies is very common, such as the irritation or allergy of bad soaps used to wash the vulva, contact allergies from inappropriate underwear, and rough straw paper are also unfavorable irritation factors; secretions and excretions from the vulva or anus, if not washed or cleared, will also promote and aggravate the occurrence of vulvar pruritus. Disorders of body fluid and endocrine metabolism are also closely related to vulvar itching.

1. Mental factors

Emotional tension often coexists with vulvar pruritus, and there is no doubt that tension is often affected by vulvar pruritus. They are mutually causal and dominate the occurrence and development of vulvar pruritus. Insomnia and vulvar pruritus in the elderly are often causally related and interrelated. Insomnia can further aggravate emotional stimulation, creating a vicious cycle of vulvar pruritus.

2. Inflammatory diseases

Common pruritic skin diseases can affect the vulva and cause vulvar itching, such as scabies, pediculosis, fungal infection and contact dermatitis. Other diseases such as proctitis, cervicitis and vaginitis also often cause varying degrees of itching. Anal itching is also a common cause of vulvar itching. Candida infection or Trichomonas infection of the vulva and vagina is a common cause of itching.

3. Internal medicine diseases

Many medical diseases such as liver disease, bile duct disease, kidney disease, tumors, diabetes, etc. can manifest as vulvar itching. In elderly women with diabetes, vulvar itching may be a unique manifestation of diabetes itself or a precursor symptom of it. Therefore, dermatologists and obstetricians and gynecologists often conduct urine tests and glucose tolerance tests on patients based on clues from vulvar itching and discover some potential or mild diabetes.

Pay attention to the cleanliness of the vulva, do not use soap to wash the vulva; try to avoid scratching and rubbing the affected area; avoid spicy and irritating foods. Pay attention to vaginal care and hygiene, wear loose and breathable pants, and avoid scratching. Do not use hot water to wash, avoid alcohol and spicy or allergic foods, and do not abuse vaginal washes.

Vulvar itching is a very common symptom for women and it affects every woman even in married women. There are many causes of vulvar itching, such as various types of vaginitis or senile vaginitis, etc. When women have symptoms of vaginitis, they need to be diagnosed in time to check the specific cause.
