Intraductal papilloma of the breast

Intraductal papilloma of the breast

There are many breast diseases that women are prone to, especially after giving birth. If they do not take care of their breasts, they are very likely to suffer from diseases. The most common one is breast hyperplasia, which is very harmful to women's breasts and takes a long time to treat. Intraductal papilloma is something women are not familiar with, and this type of disease also manifests in many aspects, which are introduced in detail below.

Symptoms of intraductal papilloma of the breast:

1. Nipple discharge

Nipple discharge accounts for about 80% of patients seeking medical treatment and is the main symptom of intraductal papilloma. Patients often accidentally find blood stains on their shirts. Nipple discharge comes from the milk ducts, is spontaneous, and is often bloody or serous. According to Stout statistics, bloody discharge accounted for 78% and serous discharge accounted for 22%. The secretions of young women are often serous, while those of older women are mostly turbid or milky. Because the tumor tissue is fragile and rich in blood vessels, slight squeezing can cause bleeding or rust-colored secretions, which is the most common cause of bloody milk discharge from intraductal papilloma.

Whether nipple discharge occurs in patients with papilloma is related to the type and location of the papilloma. Nipple discharge is most common in patients with papilloma occurring in the large ducts in the center of the nipple. However, when the tumor is located at the edge of the nipple, in the small and medium-sized ducts or in the alveoli, nipple discharge is less common.

For male nipple discharge, ductal papilloma should be considered first, and one should be highly alert to the possibility of malignancy. Literature reports that if a woman over 45 years old has nipple bleeding accompanied by a breast lump, the possibility of malignant transformation of ductal papilloma should be considered.

2. Pain

Only a small number of patients with this disease experience local pain and tenderness, which is often caused by breast duct dilatation, overflow of lipid-like substances in the duct, and inflammation.

3. Breast lumps

A breast lump is the primary sign of intraductal papilloma. According to domestic literature reports, 66% to 75% of the patients with this disease are accompanied by tumors. During palpation, a lump may be felt at the nipple, areola area, or center of the breast. The diameter is usually 1 to 2 cm, but some may be smaller than 1 cm, or 3 to 7 cm or larger. Solitary intraductal papilloma may be caused by ductal obstruction and dilation. A soft, smooth and movable mass is felt, and sometimes radial cords can be felt next to the areola. If the patient has nipple discharge and feels a small lump, there is a 95% chance that it is an intraductal papilloma. Some patients cannot feel any lumps, but only feel a few dot-like nodules in the areola area, which are actually the location of the lesions. When pressing the lump on the areola, bloody fluid can be seen flowing out of the nipple of the corresponding gland duct. Since the lump is mainly caused by bleeding and congestion of the papilloma, the lump often becomes smaller or disappears after pressing. Therefore, during the physical examination, the lump should be pressed gently to leave some blood. During the operation, the corresponding milk ducts of the nipple bleeding can be marked and the segmental breast resection can be performed.

After understanding the symptoms of intraductal papilloma of the breast, the treatment of this type of disease can be carried out according to one's own symptoms. During the treatment of intraductal papilloma of the breast, women should also pay attention to their own breasts. If any abnormalities occur, they should report them in time to avoid the problem becoming more serious.
