How long does menopause last?

When does menopause begin for women and how long does it last?

In addition to the need for surgery or radiation therapy to terminate ovarian function due to some diseases, women generally experience menopausal changes before menopause; after menopause, some menopausal symptoms may continue for a period of time. This makes it difficult to accurately grasp clinically, so we can only estimate a person's menopause start time based on her age at menopause. Strictly speaking, the time when each person starts menopause may vary slightly due to differences in region, climate, race, economy, nutrition, age of menarche, marriage and childbirth history, and contraceptive methods.

On the other hand, some records in Western history show that although the age of menopause in women has been slightly delayed, the change is not particularly large. Before the Common Era, women entered menopause at an average age of 40 to 50 years old, 35 to 60 years old in the Middle Ages, and currently in Western countries it is generally 42 to 58 years old.

In 1980, my country conducted a survey of more than 130,000 women in 29 provinces and cities. The age of natural menopause was between 42 and 58 years old, with an average of 49.5 years old. Of course, there were some women who went into menopause as early as 39 and as late as 60 years old.

An earlier or later age of menopause should be noted until no other abnormalities are found. In fact, 95% of menopause occurs around the age of 50, and rural women on average reach menopause two years earlier than urban women. In 1989, the National Perimenopausal Women's Health Survey Collaboration Group was established by Nanning Medical College, which organized 23 units across the country. The sample survey involved three groups of women, namely medical personnel, teachers, textile workers, and farmers, with approximately 2,000 people in each group. The results showed that the average age of natural menopause was 49+3.7 years old, with only 3.1% being under 40 years old and 1.1% being over 55 years old.

The factors that affect the age of menopause include: the age of menarche, the mother's menopausal age, whether or not the woman has ever been pregnant or given birth, agricultural area or urban area, culture and nature of work, etc. However, the proportion of menopausal symptoms does not vary with the age of menopause. Some people go through menopause early without any discomfort, while others experience uncomfortable symptoms for quite a period of time before completely going through menopause. According to physiological indicators, menopause begins approximately 10 years before menopause, which is around 40 years old; about 10 years after menopause, the ovarian function completely disappears and people enter old age.
