Many new mothers who choose to give birth naturally have to undergo episiotomy surgery. However, due to the unique location of the surgical incision, some healing problems may often occur, among which swelling of the episiotomy wound is one of the more common problems. The following is a clinical solution to the redness and swelling of the episiotomy wound during normal delivery. I hope it will be helpful to everyone:

Generally speaking, wound abscess is one of the more common symptoms. Severe pain will appear at the wound site 1 to 2 hours after suture, and it will become heavier, and even a feeling of heaviness and distension in the anus will occur. This may be due to insufficient blood circulation when the doctor was suturing. The doctor should immediately inform the medical staff and conduct an examination immediately. In this case, as long as the sutures are removed in time, the abscess is eliminated, the bleeding spot is sutured, and the wound is sutured again, the pain will subside quickly and most of the time the injury can heal normally.

Some wounds are red and swollen because of wound infection. Mild inflammation may cause redness, swelling, heat and pain in the wound. More severe cases may cause hard scabs and purulent secretions. In this case, appropriate antibiotics should be taken and the sutures should be removed to facilitate the drainage of the pus. In addition, you can use acupuncture therapy to help reduce inflammation, or take a warm bath with a 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution. After taking these measures, due to the rich blood circulation in the vulva and its strong recovery ability, the condition will generally improve or heal after 1 to 2 weeks. If the wound is severely inflamed and tissue necrosis occurs, it is necessary to clean the wound in time, combine it with a dressing, and eliminate inflammation while promoting wound healing.

Friendly Tips

In short, if the wound is slightly swollen, it must be dealt with and treated actively to avoid serious complications. Pay attention to the postoperative wound care work:

1. Maintain a proper supine position: If the incision is on the left side, you should lie on your right side or supine to prevent the postpartum lochia from contaminating the wound.

2. Keep the vulva clean and dry: 1) Change sanitary napkins in time; 2) Nursing staff will wash the perineum for pregnant women twice within 24 hours; 3) After going to the toilet, use running water (washing pool) to clean the perineum if conditions permit; wipe from side to side after defecation to avoid contaminating the wound;

3. Perform anal contraction exercises in the early stage to promote the repair of pelvic tissue, perineum tissue and birth canal;

4. If the wound is swollen, acupuncture and moxibustion can be performed after the infection is eliminated, or cotton gauze with 75% ethanol or 50% magnesium sulfate can be applied externally to promote the absorption of edema;

5. Generally, the wound will be sutured after surgery in about 4 days. The intestinal sutures need to be absorbed slowly and will heal in about 1 month.

6. Generally, couples resume sexual intercourse about 2 months after giving birth. Warm reminder: Mothers with episiotomy wounds after giving birth are usually afraid to go to the toilet for fear of the wound opening. Under normal circumstances, this problem is not likely to occur.
