Where does kidney stones hurt in women?

The pain of kidney stones in women is mainly located in the rib angle, waist, and upper abdomen, and is often persistent. Activities or labor can cause the pain to occur or worsen. The renal colic caused by kidney stones is extremely painful, second only to the pain of childbirth, and often causes pale complexion or even low blood pressure to the point of shock.

Kidney stones are caused by the abnormal accumulation of some organic chemical substrates in the kidney function. In most cases, if the stones do not cause pain in the kidney function, some people may feel discomfort in the kidney area, soreness in the waist, etc., but there are no specific symptoms. Pain only occurs when a stone falls into the urethra, causing irritation and spasm of the urethra muscles. Because the size of the stones is different, the degree of ureteral spasm caused is different, so the degree of pain is also different. Some are dull pains or dull aches, while others are intense or severe pains like a knife stabbing. It usually occurs in the lower back and abdomen, and the pain point cannot be accurately located.

Since there is no significant difference in kidney function and urethral structure between men and women, and the principle of kidney stone pain is the same, the location of pain is also the same, and there is no individual difference.

1. Pain:

Pain is the clinical symptom of kidney stones. When the stones are large and move a long distance in the renal pelvis, the pain is mostly dull pain, sometimes a dull ache. When the stones are small and move a lot in the renal pelvis, it is easy to cause obstruction of the urethral junction and cause renal colic. Renal colic is a sudden severe pain that starts in the waist and radiates down the urethra to the bladder. The pain may also radiate to the private parts. The pain is paroxysmal and usually lasts for a few minutes or even hours, accompanied by nausea and retching. Sometimes the patient turns pale, sweats profusely, and appears physically exhausted.

2. Hematuria:

Hematuria is the second key symptom of kidney stones. The continuous occurrence of pain and hematuria is the characteristic of kidney and ureteral stones. Especially when there is more physical activity, pain and hematuria may occur suddenly. However, hematuria is usually mild and sometimes cannot be seen by the naked eye. Only under a microscope can a few to a large number of blood cells be seen, which is called microscopic hematuria. However, when the stones cause severe damage to the mucosa, macroscopic hematuria often occurs. Pain and hematuria are often triggered when the patient is more active. When stones are frequently complicated by infection, pus balls will appear in the urine, and there will be symptoms of frequent, urgent, and painful urination.

3. Pyuria: When kidney and ureteral stones are frequently complicated by infection, pus balls will appear in the urine, and clinically, high fever and low back pain may occur.

4. Fever, chills and fear of cold: When secondary subacute pyelonephritis or pyonephrosis occurs, systemic symptoms such as fever, chills and shivering may occur. Bilateral upper urinary tract stones or complete obstruction of kidney stones may cause anuria.

5. Others: Stone infarction can cause hydronephrosis and renal insufficiency. Some patients may also develop gastrointestinal diseases, anemia, etc.
