Can I drink water before taking the glucose tolerance test?

For pregnant women, it is important to do a glucose tolerance test. Glucose tolerance test is to prevent gestational diabetes during pregnancy. However, many pregnant women will drink water during the glucose tolerance test due to physical reasons. But I realized afterwards that, when doing the test, you are generally not allowed to drink water, so is it possible to drink water before testing the glucose tolerance?

Pregnant women should not drink water before a reliable glucose tolerance test. If you drink water carelessly, then the pregnant woman should measure it again another day to check the accuracy. Because drinking water will affect the test results, the data that appears at that time is inaccurate, and the results will of course be inaccurate.

When doing a glucose tolerance test, you cannot drink water during the first blood test. And everyone should also know that when doing a glucose tolerance test, drinking water six hours before a blood test can affect the secretion of insulin glargine and glucagon, and the blood sugar level in the body is prone to changes, which will affect the test results. However, after the first blood test, women need to drink glucose. At this time, they can drink appropriate amounts of water, which is conducive to the rapid digestion and absorption of glucose. After the second blood test, it is not suitable to drink water until the final blood test is completed.

You cannot drink water when doing the glucose tolerance test, and you need to pay attention to other matters. You don't have to drink all the granulated sugar at once. It's best to control it within 10 minutes. Also, the night before the sugar tolerance test, you should eat a lighter diet and less rice. If you are really hungry, eat some winter melon to fill your stomach. And after 8 o'clock at night, don't finish anything except warm water.

When should the glucose tolerance test be done?

Previously, we talked about B-ultrasound for fetal abnormality screening. The best time for B-ultrasound for fetal abnormality screening is between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, because the fetus can be observed most clearly during this time. There are regulations on the time for examination for major fetal abnormality screening.

Similarly, the glucose tolerance test also has certain time requirements. At present, hospitals in my country widely use the national standards of the Ministry of Health for the diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy, that is, for pregnant women with normal blood sugar in the early pregnancy, it is recommended to conduct a 75g reliable glucose screening at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy to test blood sugar levels on an empty stomach and 1 hour and 2 hours after drinking sugar. If any one of the three items reaches or exceeds the specified value, that is, the blood sugar level and the blood sugar level 1 hour and 2 hours after taking sugar are respectively: 5.1mmol/L, 10.0Mmol/L, and 8.5mmol/L, then gestational diabetes can be diagnosed. It is not difficult to find that many examinations will be conducted in the time range of 24-28 weeks, because this time range is very important for pregnant women and fetuses, because at this stage the fetus has been formed, various organs have also developed, and it is the best time to observe the fetus. The glucose tolerance test is particularly important for expectant mothers and babies. Therefore, pregnant mothers should attach great importance to the glucose tolerance test and pay attention to the best time for the glucose tolerance test.
