Does wearing an IUD hurt?

For women who have already given birth, if they no longer want children, they can use contraceptive rings to prevent pregnancy. This is a very effective and simple solution. Of course, it should be noted that wearing an IUD is also a minor operation. Although this operation is relatively minor, it will cause pain to a certain extent. Moreover, everyone's physical constitution is different. Some people's physical constitution is relatively sensitive, so the pain will be relatively obvious, but this pain will not last long.

Does wearing an IUD hurt?

IUD insertion is a long-term contraceptive measure. Many women who are preparing to have an IUD inserted want to know: does it hurt? Does it hurt to wear an IUD? Generally speaking, IUD insertion does not cause any pain. Most people now use painless IUD insertion, so there is no pain during the whole process.

IUD placement depends on the individual and is not suitable for everyone. After the IUD is inserted, due to the mechanical pressure of the contraceptive device, some people will experience side effects such as bleeding, pain, secondary infection, and reproductive tract damage, among which uterine bleeding is the most common. Some women may also experience increased menstruation, prolonged menstrual periods, or bloody vaginal discharge. Studies have shown that this is due to the IUD stimulating the endometrium, causing tissue chemical changes and producing local coagulation disorders.

Common hazards of having an IUD inserted include pain in one lower limb or lower back. In addition, the IUD can only prevent normal pregnancy in the uterine cavity, but cannot prevent abnormal pregnancy outside the uterus (i.e. ectopic pregnancy). Therefore, a small number of women with IUD may experience ectopic pregnancy.

If severe discomfort symptoms occur after IUD insertion, such as heavy bleeding, gynecological inflammation, etc., the IUD may need to be temporarily removed and replaced at an appropriate time, or the IUD may need to be abandoned and other contraceptive methods adopted. It is normal to experience a small amount of vaginal bleeding, back pain, and lower abdominal pain after the IUD is inserted. Mild cases do not require treatment and will heal on their own in about a week.

The side effects of the IUD include:

1. Lower abdominal pain or back pain: After the IUD is inserted, the intrauterine device can easily cause uterine contractions, which can lead to mild lower abdominal pain or back pain.

2. Increased vaginal discharge: This is one of the negative effects of having an IUD inserted. If an intrauterine device with a tail thread is used, it can cause a significant increase in cervical secretions. Over time, the endometrial tissue adapts. If the amount of vaginal discharge increases and you experience symptoms such as fever, lower abdominal pain, etc., you need to seek medical attention immediately.

3. Minor bleeding: The side effects of IUD insertion mainly occur 3-4 days after insertion, because the intrauterine device can scratch the cervical canal lining and cause bleeding while stimulating uterine contraction. If the bleeding is not excessive, no treatment is necessary and the condition will generally return to normal after a week.

4. Increased menstrual flow: This side effect mainly occurs in the first three months after the insertion of the IUD. Due to the drastic change in the body's balance, women's menstrual cycle will be prolonged or irregular spotting will occur.

5. Infection: This is the most criticized disadvantage of IUD insertion. In order to prevent infection, doctors will strictly disinfect the female vulva, vagina, endometrium and other parts when inserting an IUD to avoid infection. If a woman has a history of genital tract inflammation, or has sex too early or too frequently after having an IUD inserted, infection may occur.
