The dangers of lying down to breastfeed

Because pregnant women are relatively weak after giving birth, the wounds from giving birth have not yet healed completely. Therefore, when feeding your baby, you will want to lie down to feed him. However, lying down to feed him is a very bad thing for the baby. First of all, feeding while lying flat may cause the baby to choke when swallowing milk. The baby's cervical spine moves forward when drinking milk, which may cause deformation, and the possibility of the baby regurgitating milk will also increase.

1. Choking on milk, ear canal inflammation

The baby's stomach and throat are not fully developed yet, so he will swallow air into his stomach when he feeds. When the air squeezes the milk out.

The baby's Eustachian tube is flatter, wider and thicker, so when the mother lies down to breastfeed, milk can easily flow through the Eustachian tube into the middle ear, causing infection and thus causing otitis media. Otitis media can cause great hearing damage to infants, and severe chronic suppurative otitis media can even lead to deafness. Because the baby lies flat to suck milk, his mouth, ears and nose are on the same plane, and milk can easily flow out of his mouth and nose, causing choking. In severe cases, it may cause certain ear canal inflammation.

2. Formation of "underbite"

When drinking milk while lying down, the baby needs to stretch his lower jaw forward to suck. If the baby adopts this posture for a long time and the lower jaw protrudes too far forward, abnormal facial shapes such as "overbite" and "crescent face" may occur. A sunken nose root and a slightly protruding chin will affect the "overall layout" of the baby's face, so mothers should pay attention to this!

3. Affect hearing

Letting the baby lie flat to drink milk will increase the pressure in the baby's middle ear during the drinking process and affect the baby's hearing development.

4. Tooth decay

After the baby's deciduous teeth erupt, if he drinks milk while lying down, his teeth will be soaked in milk. If the baby falls asleep while drinking, the milk remaining in the mouth will rot and produce acid, which will corrode the baby's teeth. Over time, teeth are prone to decalcification and the crowns will fall off piece by piece.
