Is colposcopy painful?

In our lives, many women who suffer from gynecological diseases will undergo vaginal examinations, because most women's gynecological diseases will show symptoms in the vagina, so they need to do a colposcopy. The so-called colposcopy is to put an endoscope into the woman's vagina. This process may make women feel uncomfortable, so is the colposcopy painful?

Although a colposcope is a type of endoscope, it is different from other endoscopes in that it has to be inserted into the human body for examination. It can be examined by simply aiming it at the cervix outside the body. Therefore, patients undergoing colposcopy do not need to fast, have an enema, shave, or require anesthesia or hospitalization beforehand. This test can usually be obtained at a gynecological cancer specialist clinic. Please do not use any vaginal suppositories in the first two days. Colposcopy uses a microscope to magnify the cervix, combined with a light source and filters, to clearly examine the cervix, allowing the doctor to observe changes in the cervical epithelium and blood vessels, to diagnose whether there are any abnormal lesions, and to determine the severity of the lesions. If necessary, a biopsy through a colposcopy can provide the most accurate diagnosis as a basis for treatment.

Pap smear is a simple and convenient screening tool for preventing and treating cervical cancer. However, when the smear result is abnormal, further colposcopy is required to determine the severity of the abnormality. In addition, the colposcope can be connected to imaging systems, cameras, etc. to clearly record the lesions for future follow-up and comparison. During the examination, the patient can also be informed of his or her own condition to avoid unnecessary doubts.

Colposcopy does not increase the feeling of pain and is the same as a regular gynecological examination. The cervix can be directly observed with the naked eye to see if there are signs of erosion. Recurrent vaginal itching is considered to be related to vaginitis, and a gynecological examination and routine preliminary examination of leucorrhea are performed. There is no need to examine the cervix directly. If erosion is visible on the cervix, a TCT test can be done to see if there is any cell lesion. If there is no lesion in the cervical cells and it is just erosion, no treatment is needed.
