The consequences of secondhand smoke for women

Smoking is very harmful, and scientific research shows that the harm of secondhand smoke is no less than that of smoking. Smoking is generally a hobby of men, and many women are victims of secondhand smoke. Don't underestimate secondhand smoke. If you smell it frequently, it can have serious consequences, and we need to pay attention to it. So, what are the consequences of secondhand smoke for women? Let’s take a look below.

1. Lung cancer. Compared with men, women are more harmed by tobacco. Some women who live with smokers have a 6 times higher risk of developing lung cancer than normal people. The harm of secondhand smoke to passive smokers is no less than that to active smokers, and it is especially serious for women. Studies have shown that if a person spends more than 15 minutes with a smoker every day, the harm caused by secondhand smoke is equivalent to that of a smoker. 75% of lung cancer patients can be traced back to smoking.

2. Harm to pregnant women. Tobacco smoke can pollute the intrauterine environment where the fetus grows. Exposure to secondhand smoke is an important risk factor for pregnancy-induced hypertension and pregnancy complications in pregnant women. At the same time, exposure to secondhand smoke also affects the proliferation and differentiation of embryonic cells, leading to abnormal embryonic development, manifested in developmental disorders of the nervous system and intrauterine growth retardation.

3. Harm to the fetus. If the mother inhales secondhand smoke for a long time during pregnancy, the addictive drug nicotine in tobacco can cause blood vessel narrowing and slow blood flow, which means that the nutrition and oxygen provided to the fetus will be reduced, which can easily cause the baby to be born prematurely. However, premature babies are prone to functional disorders such as breathing, digestion, and temperature regulation, and may even die shortly after birth.

4. Causes female infertility. Smoking can have adverse effects on women's reproductive function, sexual function, endocrine system and other aspects, and increase the risk of infertility. Smoking can also seriously damage women's reproductive function and reduce their chances of getting pregnant.

How can women prevent secondhand smoke?

1. Smokers who live with women should try to smoke less high-tar cigarettes and control the amount of cigarettes they smoke. Smokers and second-hand smokers should strengthen their physical health, such as doing more physical exercise.

2. Smokers should pay attention to smoking less in public places, especially in indoor spaces with poor ventilation, to reduce pollution to their own and others' breathing environment. If women are smoking in public places, they should wear anti-smog masks to reduce the inhalation of secondhand smoke.

3. Women should take the initiative to take measures to eliminate or reduce air pollution in regular smoking environments such as homes, offices, and meeting rooms, such as placing some green plants such as spider plants and ivy, or using air purification equipment.
