Is it normal to have blood clots?

"Age Flo" is here again, and I believe many female friends will fall into this distress. There will always be small accidents of one kind or another during every menstrual period, and too much or too little menstrual flow will make us worry. In addition, the formation of blood clots, the shape, size, color, etc. of the blood clots are also a cause of distress for everyone. Many women expressed doubts about whether the presence of a blood clot meant that their health was very bad and whether they should seek medical attention immediately. Let’s explore whether it is normal to have blood clots in the body?

1. Menstrual blood clots

Women who have blood clots during their periods are mostly suffering from blood stasis, and always have symptoms of qi stagnation and blood stasis, such as rough, dull facial skin and acne. There are many reasons for irregular menstruation and blood clots in women, and they cannot be generalized. It is necessary to go to a regular hospital for examination to determine the cause based on the examination results. In addition, when women have blood clots during their periods, they should pay attention to menstrual health care, keep warm to prevent cold, avoid having sex during menstruation, do not do strenuous exercise, do not eat raw, cold or spicy foods, do not overwork, maintain a happy mood, and combine work and rest.

2. Formation of blood clots

Menstrual blood usually does not coagulate because there is more plasmin in it. Plasmin dissolves the fibrinogen in the blood, making it easier to liquefy and facilitate its discharge. However, sometimes, when the menstrual blood flows faster and faster, sometimes the plasmin does not have time to completely dissolve the blood, and blood clots will be produced. In this case, a small amount of blood clots does not cause any discomfort, which we can clinically consider to be within the normal range. If there are too many blood clots and accompanied by discomfort in some corresponding areas, such as dysmenorrhea, a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen, or even back pain and abdominal pain, then we need Chinese medicine to adjust and modulate.

3. TCM talks about "blood clots"

So what do we in traditional Chinese medicine think about the problem of blood clots during menstruation? According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, blood flows when it is hot and coagulates when it is cold. In most cases, blood clots are caused by qi stagnation, liver qi stagnation, or exposure to cold pathogens. There are internal deficiency cold and external excess cold that causes cold coagulation. Both qi stagnation and cold coagulation can cause blood stasis. In the case of blood stasis, blood clots will form during menstruation, and the color will be darker, and may even be combined with symptoms of dysmenorrhea. Another situation is the symptom of picky eating. Some patients have insufficient qi and blood. The function of qi and blood is that qi promotes blood circulation. If qi is deficient, it will cause weak propulsion, making the blood flow sluggish, and blood clots will also form. This is the type of qi deficiency and blood stasis that will also form blood clots. In this case, the color of the blood clot is relatively not as dark purple, and the patient will have abdominal pain and some symptoms of dysmenorrhea, which manifests as continuous pain. Therefore, in such cases, Chinese medicine is particularly good at regulating the condition.
