The surgery involves using fat from the patient's stomach or thighs via liposuction to create the breasts. Before the transplant, about half of the fat is extracted from the fat within the regenerative cells that are naturally produced by stem cells. This concentration process can enhance fat grafting. The same technique is used in "cellular fat grafting," a reconstructive procedure following cosmetic breast augmentation surgery that is now being offered at several centers around the world.

The trial is currently underway in NHS locations in London, Glasgow, Swansea, Norwich and North Tyneside. But BAAPS believes more clinical trials are needed to determine its safety. "It's a scary thought that this unproven research is being used in the commercial sector," said Adam Searle, MD, former BAAPS president and consultant plastic surgeon. "When it is used by inadequately trained practitioners, the harm it causes is immeasurable."

They will treat 200 patients by the end of the year, Valentina Petrone, a private clinic doctor, said in a statement, welcoming the BAAPS's opinion but insisting it is safe and taking some precautions with the procedure. "As a private clinic, we are confident in the safety of this treatment. Additionally, the ongoing studies provide additional confidence. We have strict patient selection criteria and clinical protocols. We look forward to completing the studies and any additional findings over time and will adapt the protocols accordingly if necessary."
