Reasons for high Down syndrome screening values

Reasons for high Down syndrome screening values

For pregnant mothers, Down syndrome screening test is very necessary to ensure the health of themselves and their fetuses. If the Down syndrome screening value is high, it means that the fetus has a higher chance of suffering from congenital idiocy. So, do pregnant mothers know the reason why the Down syndrome screening values are high? In fact, this may be related to the diet of the pregnant mother. Next, we will introduce the factors that lead to high Down syndrome screening values.

Down screening is the screening for Down syndrome, also known as Down syndrome, trisomy 21, or congenital idiocy. It means that the patient's 21st pair of chromosomes has one more than the normal person (normal people have one pair), and it is the most common chromosomal aneuploidy disease. By taking blood samples from pregnant women for testing, we can determine the probability that the fetus will suffer from congenital idiocy. It should be noted that this is not only a check for the pregnant woman herself, but also the husband needs to have blood drawn for the test. Some pregnant women do not understand Down syndrome and go for check-up alone.

There are certain bases for pregnant women to judge Down syndrome screening, as well as normal values for Down syndrome screening. Due to different methodologies, this value may be different. Generally speaking, doctors set the critical value at 1/250-380. If it is greater than this value, it is high risk, and if it is less than this value, it is low risk. If the results of the Down screening test show that the fetus is at a higher risk of Down syndrome, further confirmatory tests should be carried out - amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling.

However, it should be noted that pregnant mothers must discuss carefully with their doctors when doing chorionic villus sampling, because this is an invasive test, which requires obtaining some cell samples from the developing placenta. If amniocentesis is performed, although its accuracy rate is as high as 99% and the risk is lower than that of chorionic villus sampling, it is also an invasive test. Therefore, pregnant mothers must consider carefully before undergoing these two operations. After all, the child does not belong to the pregnant mother alone, he (she) is related to the whole family.

Approximately a baby with Down syndrome is born in our country every 20 minutes. This is a terrible statistic, so it must attract the attention of people all over the country. Children with Down syndrome have low intelligence, are unable to take care of themselves, and carry multiple system complications that cannot be cured throughout their lives, thus placing a huge mental and financial burden on their families. Therefore, pregnant mothers can only focus on prevention. If unfortunately the fetus is diagnosed with Down syndrome, then they can only give up the baby. Pregnant mothers may think that this practice is cruel, but it gives their children a healthy body and allows them to learn to walk and talk step by step. As a parent, I feel happy and infinitely grateful every time. Children are the best gift God can give to a family.
