What should I do if I don’t sleep well during confinement?

Many pregnant women will experience a decline in sleep quality after giving birth. This has a lot to do with their own physical factors. Due to the common wounds on the body after giving birth and the tense mood, coupled with the high frequency of feeding and frequent crying of newborns, the normal rest of the mother will always be affected. However, if you don't sleep well, you won't be able to sit well during the confinement period. So, what should you do if you don't sleep well during the confinement period?

1. Comfortable bedding

Mothers spend a lot of time in bed, so a comfortable bed is very important. The bedding should have a certain degree of softness. If it is too soft, it will be difficult for mothers to turn over, which is not conducive to rest and sleep. Secondly, choose a soft blanket that is less irritating to the skin. New mothers should not wear tight underwear to sleep, try to wear loose pajamas, so that the blood can flow smoothly. When the weather is good, put your quilt and pillow in the sun to keep them clean and hygienic.

2. It is best to lie on your right side

Many mothers like to sleep on their backs, which usually doesn’t have any impact. However, if you often lie on your back after giving birth, it is easy to cause a retroverted uterus, which is why some mothers often complain of pain in the waist and knees, and discomfort in the waist. The best sleeping position is to alternate between lying on your side and lying on your stomach frequently. This can prevent uterine retroversion and facilitate the discharge of lochia.

New mothers should not lie on their left side for a long time, as this will put pressure on the heart and be detrimental to the blood circulation of the heart. Therefore, it is best to lie prone in the morning and evening during confinement for about 25 minutes each time, being careful not to compress the breasts. You can lie on your right side at ordinary times. This helps to eliminate fatigue, prevent the uterus from tilting backward, and facilitate the discharge of lochia.

3. Don’t sleep in the same bed with your baby

After giving birth, new mothers will sweat and discharge lochia, so it is inevitable that they will have sweat on their bodies. Sleeping in the same bed with the baby is not good for the baby's hygiene. Secondly, mothers are often afraid of crushing or waking up the baby, so new mothers will always be nervous when sleeping. It is recommended to place the baby in a crib or next to the mother's bed so that the new mother can assume a free and comfortable position.

4. Improve sleep quality

Poor sleep after childbirth can easily lead to postpartum headaches, postpartum hair loss and other diseases. Drinking hot milk or soaking your feet in hot water for 20 minutes before going to bed can help improve sleep quality. It is particularly important to remind you not to take hot tonics such as ginseng and deer antler immediately after giving birth, as new mothers are easily weak and cannot benefit from the tonic.
