Why do I wet the bed after giving birth?

After a woman gives birth to a baby, many organs in her body will not recover quickly because the 10 months of pregnancy have brought great changes to the female body. After giving birth, women will also have some problems with their bodies. The most common problem is that they cannot hold their urine and often wet the bed. This problem makes women feel very embarrassed and they don’t know what’s going on.

Causes of bedwetting after childbirth

1. After ten months of pregnancy, whether it is a natural birth or a cesarean section, the pelvic floor muscles will be damaged to varying degrees. Especially in the late pregnancy, the fetus has been pressing on the pelvic floor like a watermelon, and the pelvic floor will naturally be damaged. This damage occurs before delivery, but the extent of the damage varies depending on the strength of the pelvic floor function.

2. Mild symptoms of pelvic floor damage include vaginal relaxation, sexual dissatisfaction or lower abdominal distension, frequent urination, constipation, etc. Moderate or severe pelvic floor damage can manifest as urinary incontinence, uterine prolapse, bladder prolapse, rectal prolapse, etc.

3. The difference between normal delivery and cesarean section is that the symptoms of lower urinary tract in the former are more obvious in a short period of time. Generally speaking, women who give birth naturally are more likely to experience problems such as urethral displacement, frequent urination, and urinary incontinence within one year after delivery than women who give birth by cesarean section, but this difference will disappear after one year. If women who undergo cesarean section and have damaged pelvic floor do not receive timely rehabilitation training or treatment, they will also experience various symptoms of pelvic floor damage after delivery.

4. About 50% of women will experience pelvic organ prolapse after childbirth, accompanied by bladder and rectal functional disorders. If they do not do any rehabilitation exercises, more than 90% cannot recover on their own. For women who have symptoms of urinary incontinence during pregnancy, even if they no longer have symptoms after delivery, 80%-90% will still experience urinary incontinence within 3-5 years after delivery.

Do "anal contraction exercise" to prevent postpartum urinary incontinence

Pre-pregnancy care and exercise during pregnancy are the most effective ways to prevent pelvic floor damage.

The method is actually very simple, it is "anal contraction exercise", which mainly improves pelvic blood circulation, strengthens pelvic floor muscles, and improves the function of urethra and anal sphincter by actively contracting the muscles around the anus, vagina, and urethra.

The specific method of "anal contraction exercise" is: each time "anal contraction" should be at least 5 seconds, then relax, do it continuously for 15-30 minutes, and do it 2-3 times a day.

All women should practice it regularly. It is convenient and easy and can be done while watching TV, chatting, etc. It is more effective to practice while standing rather than sitting.

When doing anal contraction exercises, be sure to relax your abdomen and do not increase abdominal pressure.

How to determine whether the abdomen is relaxed? Just place your hands on your abdomen and feel the lack of tension in your abdomen.

To prevent postpartum urinary incontinence, doing anal contraction exercises before and during pregnancy is more effective than doing them after delivery. Because there is no psychological pressure before and during pregnancy, you can exercise calmly, which is more conducive to enhancing the elasticity of the pelvic floor muscles and preparing for the weight-bearing of the pelvic floor in the later stages of pregnancy. On the contrary, if you wait until symptoms of pelvic floor damage appear after childbirth before starting rehabilitation training, the psychological pressure will be much greater. The more anxious you are and the less you can relax, the worse the effect will be.
