What is the reason for no milk after giving birth?

Some mothers have insufficient milk after giving birth. This is actually very common. Generally, adjustments to the diet and breast massage can have a good improvement effect. For this kind of phenomenon, you can promote milk secretion through lactation-inducing methods, and you can learn more from the experience of your predecessors.

1. Maternal factors

Breast structure factors: such as inverted nipples, the baby cannot fully suck milk, and the mother’s psychological barriers cause her to refuse feeding.

Mental factors: can affect the function of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, thereby reducing or inhibiting the secretion of prolactin and reducing milk production. The secretion of milk is regulated by the central nervous system, and the mental state of the mother has a great influence on the amount of milk secretion.

Nutritional factors: Improper nutrition can lead to insufficient breast milk secretion. Some mothers have a decreased appetite after childbirth, while some have picky eating habits, which leads to improper nutrition.

2. Mode of delivery: The pain of delivery and perineal tearing lead to increased sympathetic nerve excitement and catecholamine release, inhibiting the secretion of oxytocin and reducing milk secretion. When the baby sucks, it causes uterine contraction pain. The mother who has undergone cesarean section is unwilling to breastfeed on demand due to the pain of the surgical incision. The mother who has undergone cesarean section will think that the blood loss during the operation and the liquid and semi-liquid diet after the operation cannot meet the nutritional needs, and she does not have enough milk to feed the baby.

3. Postpartum hemorrhage: During pregnancy, the pituitary gland in the body proliferates and hypertrophies. After delivery, the concentration of hormones secreted by the placenta in the blood drops suddenly, the pituitary gland quickly degenerates, and the blood flow to the anterior pituitary decreases. In severe cases, pituitary function decreases and milk secretion decreases.

4. Time of first breastfeeding: Milk secretion is closely related to early sucking. Early sucking can stimulate the posterior pituitary gland to secrete prolactin. At the same time, early sucking, frequent sucking, and emptying of the breasts of newborns can speed up the lactation process and increase the amount of milk. Early sucking can reflexively cause the neurohypophysis to release oxytocin. Oxytocin can cause the myoepithelial cells surrounding the mammary alveoli to contract and discharge milk.

5. Feeding level: Lack of correct feeding skills will affect the secretion of breast milk. For example, incorrect posture may prevent the baby from fully sucking the nipple, resulting in the baby being unable to fully suck milk, which will affect milk secretion.
