Why do my hands hurt during confinement?

In China, confinement after childbirth is a very important thing, because whether you do it well or not will directly affect your future physical health. However, we all know that many times, there are some taboos during confinement after childbirth, which many women cannot accept. Some women will find that they are prone to hand pain during confinement after childbirth. Let’s analyze the reasons for you below.

This situation does not rule out carpal tunnel syndrome. 10% of women experience carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy and after childbirth. Specific manifestations are: numbness of fingers, sometimes the hands cannot be clenched, lack of strength, slightly swollen hands and feet, dull pain in the wrist joints, and the pain feels similar to rheumatic symptoms but is not rheumatism. Generally, all symptoms disappear after delivery or some time after delivery.

The reasons are:

(1) Nerve compression. During pregnancy, there is an overall increase in the amount of water circulating in the body. Therefore, the ligaments in the wrist and other parts become edematous, compressing the nerve channel that controls the fingers, the median nerve, causing numbness and pain, which causes carpal tunnel syndrome. (2) Vitamin B12 deficiency. Lack of this vitamin can cause peripheral nerve disorders and lead to numbness and pain in the joints.

(3) Traditional Chinese medicine believes that postpartum joint pain is related to postpartum blood deficiency, blood stasis, or retention of wind, cold and dampness. If blood is deficient, the limbs, tendons, veins and joints will not be nourished; if blood is stagnant, the circulation of qi and blood will be blocked; if wind, cold and dampness invade the body and stay between the skin, meridians and joints, blocking the circulation of qi and blood, all of which can cause postpartum joint pain.

Treatment method: The diet should be light and low in salt; supplement vitamin B12; do not over-moisten the wrists and fingers; hot compresses can relieve pain, but do not use pain-relieving elastic bandages.

After seeing the reasons introduced above, mothers who are in confinement should pay attention. In many cases, if you do not pay attention to the care and health of some finger joints, it may cause this kind of pain problem, which will naturally have an adverse impact on our normal life and work.
