I believe everyone is familiar with clams. Clams are shellfish that we often eat. Clams are very rich in nutrients. Clams contain a variety of trace elements needed by the human body. Let’s take a look at the following introduction to clams.

Clams are molluscs with oval shells, light brown in color, and purple edges. They live on the shallow seabed and include many varieties, such as garden clams, Manila clams, and Scolopendra subspecies. Its meat is extremely delicious and is known as "the most delicious in the world" and "the king of all flavors". It is also relatively nutritionally comprehensive, containing protein, fat, carbohydrates, iron, calcium, phosphorus, iodine, vitamins, amino acids, taurine and other ingredients. It is low in calories, high in protein and low in fat. It can prevent and treat chronic diseases in middle-aged and elderly people. It is indeed a high-quality and inexpensive seafood. The oldest clam found so far is 507 years old.

Nutritional Value

Clam meat is rich in nutritional value. Every 100 grams of clam meat contains 10 grams of protein, 1.2 grams of fat, 2.5 grams of carbohydrates, as well as various minerals and vitamins such as iodine, calcium, phosphorus, and iron. The clam shell contains calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, magnesium silicate, iodine, bromide, etc. Modern medical research has found that there is a substance called clam toxin in clams, which has an anti-cancer effect of inhibiting tumor growth.

Chemical composition

Every 100 grams of edible part contains 80 grams of water, 10.8 grams of protein, 1.6 grams of fat, 4.6 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of ash, 37 milligrams of calcium, 82 milligrams of phosphorus; 14.2 milligrams of iron, 400 international units of vitamin A, 0.03 milligrams of thiamine, 0.15 milligrams of riboflavin, and 1.7 milligrams of niacin; each kilogram of dried clams contains 2400 micrograms of iodine. Every 100 grams of edible part contains 5 mg of ascorbic acid.

Medicinal value

Clams taste salty and cold, and have the effects of nourishing yin and moistening dryness, promoting diuresis and reducing swelling, and softening and dispersing lumps. It is recorded in the "Bencao Jingshu" that: "Clams are moisturizing and help produce body fluids, so they can moisten the five internal organs, stop thirst, and stimulate the appetite. Salt can enter the blood and soften hard masses, so it can treat blood clots in women and chronic diseases such as cold and heat." In addition to this traditional usage, clam tissues are also chemically extracted, and the extract is called clam toxin. Animal experiments have shown that clams have inhibitory and alleviating effects on sarcoma and ascites tumors in mice.

Modern medicine believes that eating stewed clam meat three times a day can cure diabetes; regular consumption of clam meat and leeks can treat symptoms such as thirst, dry cough, irritability, and hot hands and feet caused by yin deficiency. Regular consumption of clams is also effective in treating goiter, jaundice, difficulty urinating, abdominal distension and other symptoms. (Collected Notes on the Classic of Materia Medica)

Effects

Clam meat and shellfish mollusks contain Dalta 7-cholesterol and 24-methylene cholesterol, which have the effect of lowering serum cholesterol. They have the unique function of inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver and accelerating the excretion of cholesterol, thereby reducing cholesterol in the body. They are more effective than the commonly used cholesterol-lowering drug sitosterol. People often feel refreshed and pleasant after eating clams and shellfish, which is undoubtedly helpful in relieving some troublesome symptoms.
