It has been made clear: it is prohibited to produce and publish videos of overeating. How harmful are overeating?

Overeating is harmful to your health and wasting food is shameful.

Phrases like "Challenge the big eater, eating show 666" often appear on major short video platforms. In recent years, with the rise of short videos, many people have mastered the "traffic code" and rely on eating shows to attract fans.

Our country has also issued the relevant "Anti-Food Waste Work Plan", which clearly prohibits the production and release of overeating videos#. Overeating will not only make you fat, but it can also be fatal.

In 2019, Juliet, a Chinese-American professional glutton ranked 17th in the world, passed away at the age of 54.

In 2020, a man in Shenyang became a food broadcaster and his weight increased from 200 catties to 280 catties. He died of brain stem hemorrhage at the age of 30.

In 2021, the internet celebrity food blogger "Bubble Dragon" Mr. Yu Hailong passed away at the age of 29.

Most of the food bloggers seem to be enjoying their food, but they are actually wasting food behind the scenes, repeating the same thing over and over again: chew, pause, spit out, chew, spit out…

This kind of short video live broadcast chaos should really be properly regulated! Overeating is harmful to the body and wasting food is shameful. When you eat, you should also pay attention to controlling your appetite and not overeating.

In fact, many people who are losing weight also have the problem of overeating. What are the harms of overeating? How to solve it?

1. The four major hazards of overeating

1. Prone to three highs:

Overeating eating behavior will make people more inclined to choose high-oil, high-fat and high-sugar foods. Especially modern people are under great pressure and always want to eat high-sugar and high-fat foods to relieve stress. This will gradually make people gain weight and increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, hypertension and hyperglycemia.

2. Increase the risk of gastric cancer:

Many young people do not eat regularly, and irregular eating can disrupt the rhythm of gastric secretion, weaken the barrier function of the gastric mucosa, and damage the gastric mucosa. Overeating can stimulate the secretion of gastric acid, increase the gastrointestinal burden, and cause symptoms of indigestion.

In addition, studies have shown that overeating is also a risk factor for gastric cancer. [1, 2]

3. Increased risk of pancreatitis:

A meta-analysis of the common causes of acute pancreatitis in China pointed out that overeating is one of the common factors that induce pancreatitis. [3]

In 2020, a woman in Heilongjiang was admitted to the ICU due to sudden severe abdominal pain after the end of an eating broadcast. The doctor diagnosed that it was acute necrotizing pancreatitis caused by overeating.

Suffering from acute pancreatitis is very painful. Frequent overeating can cause blockage of the "pancreatic duct" and activate pancreatic enzymes. Pancreatic enzymes are corrosive and can cause damage to surrounding organs. In severe cases, they can lead to multiple organ dysfunction.

During an attack, the abdomen will experience severe pain (like a knife cut), bleeding, vomiting, and fever. If medical treatment is not sought promptly, it may be life-threatening.

4. May induce colon cancer:

An analysis of the risk factors for colorectal cancer in 109 patients showed that in terms of diet, 4.2% of patients had a high-fat diet, 56.9% had a low-fiber diet, and 78.9% had overeating. [4]

Although the research sample is small, the proportion of overeating is still quite high, which may be related to the induction of colon cancer.

5. Binge eating disorder:

People who often overeat may suffer from bulimia, which is a psychological illness and may require the intervention of a psychologist.

Since overeating has so many harmful effects, how can we improve it?

2. Change overeating, it is recommended to do these 7 points

Concentrate on eating: Doing other things while eating, such as watching TV or playing with your phone, can easily distract us and make us eat too much without realizing it. Enjoying food wholeheartedly can help us better control the amount of food we eat.

Chew slowly: When we are full, the brain will receive feedback and tell the body that we are full. However, this process will be delayed; if you eat quickly, by the time your brain realizes that you are full, you have often eaten too much. Chewing slowly can help you avoid overeating.

Adjust the order of eating: eat 2 large mouthfuls of vegetables at each meal, then eat protein-rich food, and then eat rice, and repeat this cycle. This is because vegetables are not only rich in dietary fiber, but also low in calories, which can enhance satiety and help you better control your appetite.

Drink soup/water before meals: Drinking a large bowl of light soup or about 300 ml of boiled water before meals can increase fullness, control appetite, and reduce food intake.

Be wary of oil and salt: try to eat less or no foods high in oil and salt. Be wary of “braised,” “stir-fried,” “crispy,” and “fried” foods and dishes, as they are masters at hiding oil.

Don’t use food to relieve stress: When you are under a lot of pressure, you can try another way to relieve stress, such as running, boxing, playing ball, or reading, but don’t “turn grief into appetite.”

Don't stay up late: Leptin is a hormone that helps control appetite. If you don't get enough sleep, it will interfere with the secretion of leptin, which will increase your appetite during the day, especially craving for fat-rich foods. It is recommended to get enough sleep for 7 to 8 hours a day.

Summarize:

Cherish life, avoid overeating, and stop wasting food! A healthy body starts with a reasonable diet!
