As long as the weather is good, Ms. Lu, 38, from Hangzhou, rides her mountain bike to and from get off work, more than 20 kilometers round trip every day. She started riding in May this year, and after more than three months of persistence, she lost 12 kilograms and felt more energetic.

But since the beginning of August, Ms. Lu always felt pain in her wrist joints, and it hurt more when she held the handlebars. She thought she would recover after a rest, but half a month later, the situation became worse, and she couldn't even unscrew the bottle cap, turn the key, or even get into the house. It was not until her daily life was seriously affected that Ms. Lu came to the orthopedics department of Hangzhou First People's Hospital for treatment. After seeing her, orthopedic physician Xie Tao believed that Ms. Lu's wrist sprain was not an ordinary wrist sprain. The results of the MRI showed that she suffered from a triangular fibrocartilage complex injury (TFCC injury) in the wrist joint . Common symptoms of TFCC injury are pain or soreness in the wrist, as well as wrist weakness, especially pain when the forearm is rotated (such as twisting a towel or bottle cap, driving a car, or opening and closing door locks), and some patients will make a clicking sound when their wrists move. Xie Tao suggested that Ms. Lu undergo conservative treatment, using a wrist brace to protect and immobilize for 4-6 weeks, and then undergo rehabilitation training.

Sports enthusiasts beware

Xie Tao said that this is a difficult disease to cure, with a long recovery period and a high recurrence rate. Some patients have not recovered for more than ten years and are often called " immortal cancer ". Most people suffer from acute dorsiflexion injury of the wrist when they fall and support themselves with their wrists. This situation also often occurs in sports enthusiasts:

TFCC injuries in men are common during strength training, such as wrist dorsiflexion during dumbbell presses.

It is not always possible to find a clear cause for TFCC injury in women. Some women are born with unstable development of the radioulnar joint, which leads to injuries caused by repeated rotational and pulling movements with small weights. Ms. Lu's injury was caused by long-term wrist dorsiflexion while supporting her bicycle with her hands on the handlebars.

In addition, sports such as badminton and tennis can also cause TFCC, and even push-ups can cause it. Sports enthusiasts often confuse it with a sprain and miss the best time for treatment.

Cycling

Especially drop handlebar bikes

Choose the appropriate handle width, size and shape

Non-professional players

Increases grip area and range to reduce pressure

Secondly, choose a handlebar that can protect against shock.

You can also wear cycling gloves

Or wrap the handlebars with tape

Correct riding posture

Let's take a look at the correct angles of each joint for riding:

🔺Elbow

During riding, the elbows have a certain bending angle. Being suspended in the air, bending the elbows can not only absorb impact and reduce pressure on the shoulders, but also increase balance and reduce the risk of falling off the bicycle.

🔺Shoulder

If your shoulders are not lowered and relaxed while riding, you will feel discomfort in your back and neck. Keeping your shoulders relaxed during riding will allow you to turn your neck flexibly and prevent back discomfort.

🔺Foot and knee joints

Consciously keeping your knees in line with your feet will help you maintain a good riding position. Bending your knees too much will only reduce efficiency and overall comfort. Secondly, your feet should be placed in the correct position, with the forefoot extending beyond the axis of the pedal and the widest part of the toes resting on the pedal.

🔺Spine

An important tip when riding a bike is to keep your back straight, but not too straight.

In order to prevent yourself from unconsciously bending your back, you can focus on the strength of your abdomen. When the abdominal muscles are in a state of strength, you will naturally straighten your back and relax the other muscles in your arms and shoulders.

🔺Wrist

There should be a straight line from your elbow to your fingertips. If you find it difficult to maintain this straight line while riding, there may be something wrong with the position of the bicycle components. Observe and adjust the bicycle to make sure that the position of each component is suitable for you.

🔺Move your knees up and down

When pedaling, consciously avoid moving your knees inward or outward. They should move up and down, not sideways.

Many cyclists experience sideways movement when pedaling, which is the main cause of patellar chondromalacia caused by cycling.

Warm reminder: Any exercise should be done in moderation to avoid harming the body.
