How should patients with kidney disease eat? Eating and drinking more rationally

1. Low-salt diet

Reduce salt intake to no more than 5 g per day. Avoid eating high-salt foods such as pickles and preserved foods to reduce the burden of water and sodium excretion on the kidneys and prevent edema and hypertension.

Control invisible salt, such as the salt in seasonings such as soy sauce, MSG, and chicken essence.

2. High-quality low-protein diet

Choose high-quality protein, such as lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, soy products, etc.

Adjust protein intake according to renal function. In cases of renal insufficiency, protein intake needs to be limited to avoid increasing the metabolic burden on the kidneys.

3. Control potassium intake

People with hyperkalemia should avoid eating high-potassium foods such as bananas, oranges, potatoes, and mushrooms.

Vegetables can be blanched before cooking to reduce the potassium content.

4. Low-fat diet

Reduce the intake of animal fats, such as lard, butter, etc., and avoid eating fried foods and fatty meat.

Choose vegetable oils such as olive oil, corn oil, etc.

5. Adequate heat supply

Ensure adequate intake of carbohydrates, such as rice, noodles, steamed buns, etc., to provide the energy needed by the body.

If necessary, you can eat some foods that are rich in calories but low in protein, such as lotus root powder, wheat starch, etc.

6. Supplement vitamins and minerals appropriately

Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits to supplement vitamin C, B vitamins, etc.

However, when renal function is impaired, attention should be paid to the potassium content of certain fruits.

Kidney disease patients following scientific and reasonable dietary principles can help control the disease, improve quality of life and delay disease progression.
