The summer solstice, like the winter solstice, is a solar term that reflects the change of seasons. The summer solstice means the official start of hot weather. How can we protect our eyes on such hot days?

Several common eye diseases in summer

1) Dry Eyes

In the summer, if you stay in an air-conditioned room or an environment with poor air circulation for a long time, and the temperature is high, the tear film evaporates quickly, and the eyes are more likely to dry out, which can cause dry eyes.

2) Stye

The weather is hot in the summer, and bacteria breed quickly. If you do not pay attention to eye hygiene and rub your eyes frequently, it is easy to cause eye styes, also known as hordeolum, which is an eye disease caused by bacterial infection of the eyelids. Symptoms include: swollen, red and painful eyelids.

3) Pink Eye

Summer is also the peak season for viral conjunctivitis. Rubbing eyes and substandard swimming pool water can lead to acute conjunctivitis. Humidity, dust, and sand are conducive to the spread of viruses, which is what we call pink eye. Symptoms of conjunctivitis include red, swollen, and stinging eyes, a large amount of sticky secretions, photophobia, and excessive tears. Pink eye is contagious to a certain extent. If you have pink eye, you should seek medical attention immediately to prevent the condition from worsening and infecting others.

4) Eye allergies

As all kinds of plants sprout and bloom in summer, the amount of pollen, grass powder, catkins and other particles in the air increases greatly, and people's outdoor activities increase. The number of patients with eye allergies will also increase in this season, causing itching, redness and burning pain in the eyes.

1) Increase the humidity of the air

In the summer, when you stay in an air-conditioned room for a long time and the air is dry, you can use a humidifier to increase the humidity of the air and open windows regularly to ventilate the room to improve the air quality and prevent eye diseases such as dry eyes.

2) Pay attention to eye hygiene

Keep your eyes clean, wash your hands and trim your nails frequently, do not rub your eyes with dirty hands, and do not share towels with others. Swimming enthusiasts should try to choose swimming places with good water quality and less pollution, wear appropriate swimming goggles, wash your face and take a bath in time after swimming, and children with low immunity should try to reduce visits to public places such as swimming pools.

3) Use your eyes appropriately

Reduce the frequency of using electronic products, increase the frequency of blinking, and avoid eye fatigue caused by excessive eye use.

4) Pay attention to your diet

In summer, you can eat more foods rich in antioxidants such as blueberries, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Dry mouth is more likely to occur in summer, but be careful not to drink a large amount of water at one time to avoid causing an acute increase in intraocular pressure and increasing the risk of glaucoma.

5) Pay attention to sun protection. When doing outdoor activities, try to wear a sun hat or sunglasses to reduce the damage of ultraviolet rays to your eyes.
